Member of Parliament for Nassau Village Constituency, the Hon. Dewitt
Halson Moultrie, was elected Wednesday (May 24, 2017) as the 54th
Speaker of the Honourable House of Assembly.
The House
reassembled for the first time since the dissolution of Parliament in
April and the subsequent 2017 General Election during which the Free
National Movement won 35 of the 39 seats contested, enabling them to
form a new government.

50 Years of Majority Rule Celebrated in a People’s March, Speeches, Culture & Entertainment -

NASSAU, The Bahamas – It was 50 years ago, on January 10, 1967 when a
new era in governing The Bahamas – Majority Rule -- was ushered in. And
50 years later, the historic golden anniversary of the occasion was
celebrated on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
Bahamians, led by the
governing Progressive Liberal Party took to the streets of New
Providence and marched under the banner, “One People United in Love and
Service.”
From as early as 7:00 a.m., scores of Bahamians
assembled at Windsor Park on Wulff Road and East Street: some sporting
T-shirts with the words “50 Years: Majority Rule – A Journey Together,”
others had mini flags and other paraphernalia in the national colours of
Aquamarine, Gold and Black...

New insect species discovered at Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve on Eleuthera -

A
new species of insect has been discovered at the Leon Levy Native Plant
Preserve in Governor’s Harbour, The Bahamas National Trust’s (BNT)
first national park on Eleuthera. The insect is a katydid and belongs to
the same group as grasshoppers and crickets in
the order
Orthoptera.
Specimens of this new species were first collected in 2013 by Dr.
PaulA. De Luca, an assistant professor in the Biology Department at the
University of The Bahamas. He made the discovery while conducting a
survey of arthropods (the animal group
that includes insects, spiders, scorpions,centipedes and crabs) at the
Preserve.

Pindling presented the Hon. Loretta Butler-Turner with the Instrument of
Appointment as the Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition during a
ceremony at Government House, Sunday, December 11, 2016.

Excavation Begins of Purported Lucayan Remains in Long Island -

A multi-sectoral team of researchers and scientists has begun the
tedious work of excavating ancient remains buried in the sand dunes of
Clarence Town, Long Island. The remains are believed to be those of
Lucayans who inhabited the islands between 600 AD and the 1500s.
The
recent groundbreaking discovery has national and international
research, archaeological and historical significance as it relates to
the history of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The Antiquities,
Monuments and Museums Corporation (AMMC) is working in conjunction with
the Florida Museum of Natural History and University...

While 'Black Friday' is known to most as a huge revenue day in business,
or the day to catch great deals at your favourite shops, thousands in
Nassau took to the streets today for a Blackout March, under the
leadership of
Campaign for The Bahamas and
Our Carmichael. The campaign is led by organizer and community activist Renard Henfield. Their "
mission is to unite Bahamians through positive change and the only way for that
change to happen is if we stand together and ensure our collective voices are
heard."
The
campaign was launched on Facebook earlier this month, and says “it’s really, truly a
people’s movement” to send a clear message to politicians about the

Ancient Lucayan Skeletons Discovered in Clarence Town, Long Island -

Nassau, Bahamas — Officials from the Antiquities, Monuments & Museum
Corporation (AMMC) today announced the discovery of ancient skeleton
remains in Clarence Town, Long Island. The bones, located in two
distinct graves, appear to be that of Lucayan people who inhabited the
archipelago from 600 AD to the 1500’s.
Long Island resident Nick
Constantakis found the first set of bones of what appears to be the
remains of an elderly Lucayan male, buried face down in the sand dunes
near Clarence Town. Another discovery by Nick and Anthony Maillis of
Clarence Town revealed a second burial approximately 25 feet away from
where the original bones were located. Local residents, in turn, reached
out to Dr. Keith Tinker, Director of AMMC once the bones were
determined to be of historical significance...

Hurricane Matthew aftermath photos of Grand Bahama -

On Thursday, October 6th, category 4 Hurricane Matthew hit
the island of Grand Bahama with maximum sustained winds of 140mph and
higher gusts. At 5 am Matthew was 198 miles southeast of West End, Grand
Bahama. At 11am it was 133 miles southeast of West End, Grand Bahama.
Tropical force winds were felt by 12 noon. Due to the predicted storm
surge of 10 - 15 feet residents were urged to seek higher ground or move
to their closest hurricane shelter. The eye of the storm remained to
the west of Grand Bahama Island as it made its way northward to Florida.
Everyone
was hunkered down as winds increased and night fell. Close to 11 pm
Thursday, when the eye was between the Florida coast and the island,
pleas for help went out via social media and whatsapp for rescues in two
areas that we knew of...

son from Nassau, Bahamas proudly show us that the chore need not be
mundane.
In fact, they've proven that hurricane shutters can be art!

The Bahamas defeated the United States of America for the first time in the country’s soccer history.
The Bahamas Beach Soccer Team scored the historic win against the #15
ranked USA men’s national team in a nail biting match in Spiez,
Switzerland on Saturday.
It was a close match up, but The Bahamas came out on top, defeating the
soccer powerhouse by one point with a final score of 5-4...

BRAZIL -- Bahamian sprinter Shaunae Miller collected the first medal for
The Bahamas at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Monday, August 15th in the 400 m.
The race is causing quite the stir as Miller dived across the
finish line to take gold and beat out USA's Allyson Felix's time of 49.51; and
Jamaica's Shericka Jackson with 49.85. Miller's time was 49.44 (a
personal best), edged out Felix by a mere 0.07 seconds.
Her
dive, which is being talked up and memed on social media was perfectly
legal as Miller's torso crossed the finish line first, making her the
clear winner according to the International Association of Athletic
Federations rulebook...

98-Year Old Rotarian and Olympian Sir Durward Knowles Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Club’s Formation -

Nassau, Bahamas – At 98 years old, Sir Durward Knowles was not going to
miss celebrating the anniversary of the Rotary Club he helped establish
40 years ago on July 19, 1976. When new clubs are established, Rotary
International grants them their charter.
On Wednesday, July 20,
2016, Sir Durward was present at the Rotary Club of South East Nassau’s
weekly meeting, joining charter member and past president (PP) F. Denny
Curry as well as Judy Reiach, the daughter of the club’s charter
president, the late Edwin Deal. Also recognized were the club’s long
serving Rotarians Ralph Barnett who joined in 1982 and PP and past
assistant district governor, Roger Kelty who joined 7 months after the
club’s charter...

Lifeguards Trained for Bahamas Public Beaches -

Nassau, Bahamas - Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Perry Christie along with Minister of the
Environment and Housing, Hon. Kenred Dorsett and Executive Chairman of
the Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches Authority, Sen. Greg Burrows
were all attended the graduation ceremony of the first crop of
lifeguard trained by the Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches
Authority.
These twelve young people received 25 hours of training in
such things as swimming and CPR. Training for the lifeguards will
continue on a monthly basis...

Shaquille Hall is different. This 20-year-old is a focused, analytical
young man, who has chosen to be unfamiliar with the street life and
familiar with his studies instead.
A member of the 2013
Gentleman’s Club class, Shaquille’s outstanding performance in the
Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) exams and
other achievements led to him also becoming a National Merit Scholar in
the same year. His hard work and drive to succeed then landed him a
full-academic scholarship to the prestigious, historically black
Morehouse College in Atlanta...
