Turks & Caicos Islands Government sees significant progress in nationwide recovery efforts - Sep 1, 2014 - 2:05:43 PM

The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) has reported that the Turks & Caicos Islands Government (TCIG) has seen significant progress in its recovery efforts around the islands. 

Dr. Virginia I. Clerveaux, Director, DDME reported “With a continued increase in manpower and equipment, the recovery process is expected to be completed in approximately one week.  All major government roads in Provo are cleared and most in North and Middle Caicos, with the exception of the Kew settlement...”

The Turks and Caicos Islands’ Acting Governor and Premier received the latest update about the nation’s recovery from Tropical Storm Cristobal today, Thursday, 28 August 2014.

The Disaster Executive Policy Committee, co-chaired by the Acting Governor the Hon. Anya Williams and Premier Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing, along with Ministers and Senior civil servants, received the very latest information from North Caicos and Providenciales.

Director of Engineering and Maintenance Services, Xavier Malcolm, who is leading the effort on North Caicos advised that this afternoon flood water levels in Bottle Creek had significantly reduced due to a combination...

Turks and Caicos Public School Opening Delayed - Aug 28, 2014 - 9:17:14 AM

TURKS & CAICOS - The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports & Library Services wishes to advise the general public that public schools will reopen on Monday, 8th September 2014. The 2014-2015 academic year was schedule to begin on Monday, 1st September, however, with the passage of Tropical Storm Cristobal and the resulting flooding across much of the country, several students and teachers have been affected thus, hampering a smooth opening. After consultations with school officials a decision was taken to delay the reopening of schools by one week.

The Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring that all schools are in readiness to receive students and welcome teachers....

TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS - Heavy rainfall from the passing of Tropical Storm Cristobal over the weekend has resulted in significant flooding in several Islands especially Providenciales, North Caicos and Middle Caicos.

· Beware of and avoid areas where there is floodwater as it may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Don’t allow children to play in floodwater.

·  Stay away from downed power lines and report them to the power company.

·  Service damaged septic tanks, cesspools, pits, and leaching systems as soon as possible; damaged sewage systems are serious health hazards...

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands, Monday, August 26th, 2014 – Flight operations at Providenciales Airport resume normal operations following the passage of tropical storm Cristobal. The storm’s passage though the Turks and Caicos Islands left a trail of cancelled flights due to its impact on the islands.

Flight operations at Providenciales International Airport were suspended since Sunday due to heavy rain, strong winds, low visibility and cloud ceiling. These prevented safe operations into the country’s main port of entry.

The Turks & Caicos Islands Government (TCIG) Executive Policy Committee met to discuss the recovery plan following flooding caused by Tropical Storm Cristobal, today, Monday, 25 August 2014.

Around 12 inches of rain fell on the TCI over the weekend 23-24 August 2014. Flood water is several feet deep in places. There has been one confirmed fatality to date.

This committee will determine how TCIG will tackle the damage, mainly on the islands of Middle Caicos, North Caicos and Providenciales, by assessing the impact of the storm and allocating resources to assist in the recovery...

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands, Monday, August 25th, 2014 – Tropical storm Cristobal’s passage through the Turks and Caicos Islands has left a trail of cancelled and delayed flights due to its impact on the islands. Flight operations at Providenciales International Airport were suspended at 10:09 a.m. local on Sunday.

Heavy rain, strong winds, low visibility and cloud ceiling continue to occur, preventing safe operations into the country’s main port of entry. The adverse weather condition began late on Friday and continues unabated.

MONEY, MANPOWER and IMMEDIATE ASSESSMENT are what Premier Hon Dr. Rufus Ewing promoted in a noonday press conference (Monday August 25, 2014) held at the Ministry of Health office in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.

One emergency meeting has already been held in Grand Turk this morning, and the country's Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies has determined that two shelters will be opened, that more manpower is required and an immediate assessment of the damages in hardest hit North Caicos and Providenciales are a must.

Government has already determining that they will have to draw money from various TCIG departments to finance a swift clean up and pumping...

Judge Imposes Reporting Restrictions on Turks And Caicos Islands Media in Case Against Prominent Attorneys - Jun 10, 2014 - 11:46:15 AM

TURKS & CAICOS SUN - A High Court Judge in the Turks and Caicos Islands has imposed some serious and unusual restrictions on how the local media can report on a case involving two prominent lawyers.

On Monday June 9th, Sir James Bruce Robertson, a New Zealand Judge who was brought in specially to hear the case, ruled that the Turks and Caicos Islands media cannot even report the charges against 57-year-old Timothy Patrick O’Sullivan of the law firm Miller, Simons, O'Sullivan and 52-year-old Gordon William Kerr of the law firm Misick and Stanbrook.

According to the court order, the media can only print "the identity of the parties, the name of the judge and of counsel representing the parties and the date of any future hearings".

Vandalism Halts TCI’s Programme to Trap Stray Dogs - May 20, 2014 - 4:05:25 PM

TURKS & CAICOS - The Department of Agriculture has suspended the trapping of stray dogs due to consistent theft and the deliberate destruction of the equipment used to humanely trap the animals.

The Ministry of Environment and Human Affairs says it deeply regrets the suspension of the programme, which is designed to reduce the number of stray and feral dogs on the islands. The programme also aims to reduce the risk to life and property as a result of accidents or public health issues resulting from disease or bites.

Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Mark Butler noted: “Vandalism has rendered all of our traps completely inoperable and prevent the continued removal of stray dogs...

TURKS & CAICOS - The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Library Services extends congratulations to Mr. Billy Forbes, former Soccer player for the Turks and Caicos Islands on his recent signing as a professional player.

Mr. Forbes was recently signed to the San Antonio Scorpions on an eighteen-month contract.  The San Antonio Scorpions is an American professional Soccer team based in San Antonio, Texas, United States. With this eighteen month contract Billy is now officially considered a professional Soccer player.

The Ministry also extended congratulations to the Turks and Caicos Football Association for its role in Mr. Forbes’ soccer career.

After tourist arrivals from Brazil to Turks and Caicos grew by 95.5% year-on-year in 2013, from 605 tourists in 2012 to 1, 185 tourists in 2013, tourism officials are ramping up its presence in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janerio and Jundiaí. While the actual numbers may seem minuscule, the growth percentage is much to tout about and shows interest from this emerging market...

As part of ongoing efforts to empower the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), the Department of Social Development and Gender Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Home Affairs, is reviving the TCI Chapter of 100 Hundred Black Men.

Public meetings and other activities have been planned in Grand Turk and Providenciales (see schedule below) and the Department urges existing members and other interested individuals to attend the meetings and get involved in the activities.

TURKS & CAICOS - The Department of Economic Planning & Statistics, Ministry of Finance, Trade and Industry has published the 2013 External Merchandise Trade Figures. A copy is attached for your convenience.  

The figures indicate that despite the rather sluggish growth in 2012/13,  revenue from customs duties still accounted for more than a quarter of public sector recurrent revenue and continues to be the major recurrent revenue earner for the Turks and Caicos Islands. However, revenue from merchandise exports was $4,675 in 2012/13, when compared to $45,795 in 2011/12; which shows a decline of 97.6% in the revenue generated from exports.
