Help save the Elbow Reef Lighthouse - Apr 21, 2017 - 3:06:04 AM

collage_sm_1_.jpg
The Bahamas are home to a great number of cultural treasures. Counted among them are eleven imperial light stations constructed to guide shipping interests safely through the archipelago during the nineteenth century. These stations were constructed between 1836 and 1887 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service to curb the economic loss incurred from frequent wrecks on Bahamian reefs and sandbanks. Each was manned by two or more keepers who would keep the light shining for those navigating the waterways at night.

The Elbow Reef Lighthouse is one such light that has guided generations of ship captains and yachtsmen in and around Elbow Cay in the Abacos since 1864. References to this particular light can be found in World War I correspondences and logs of submarine captains, who frequented The Bahamas...

DNA Ratification Speech by Claire Basden - Nov 1, 2016 - 4:28:06 PM

I first would like to give God all honor and glory for entrusting me with this opportunity. I do not take this moment lightly and I accept this position in all humility. To our Leader of the Democratic National Alliance movement; Mr. Branville McCartney, Deputy Leader Mr. Chris Mortimer along with the Executive and Supporting Team; my mother and mentor Deborah Basden, my family, friends and to my fellow Bahamians good morning.

I remember many conversations discussing how the Bahamas needs change in its political system and fast. This change we agreed needed to be a radical one. One that will definitely shift the direction our country is headed. For too long we have been accustomed to accepting the status quo of politics...

Prime Minister Christie's Remarks at Abaco Business Outlook - Sep 22, 2016 - 12:50:31 PM

If we closely examine the facts we can demonstrate that Abaco has consistently delivered historical growth trends based on steady and methodical performance in both its air and boating sectors. In fact, it is one of only a handful of islands in our archipelago that has experienced a kind of robust, organic and measured multi-sector development delivering economic returns that are the envy of other destinations within The Bahamas and in the Region.

In the first half of this year Abaco experienced incremental growth in each of its top ten US markets which puts it on track to deliver solid returns for the full year 2016.

With over ninety-nine thousand visitors coming by air to the destination in 2015, Abaco is also one of only three islands in The Bahamas that was able to meet or exceed the region’s overall growth rate of seven (7.3) percent in foreign air arrivals last year...
