Bahamian artist chosen for world’s most prestigious art exhibition - Mar 6, 2015 - 6:36:23 AM
The list of artists for curator’s Okwui Enwezor’s
“All the World’s Futures”
at the 56th Venice Biennale 2015 has been released. The show consists
of over 136 artists from fifty-three countries, including Bahamian
artist
Lavar Munroe. The Biennale will also feature a space for live programming in the Central Pavilion designed by David Adjaye called
The Arena.
“The
linchpin of this program will be the epic live reading of all three
volumes of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital,” Enwezor states. “Here, Das Kapital
will serve as a kind of Oratorio that will be continuously read live,
throughout the exhibition’s seven months’ duration.” The Biennale has
also commissioned Kara Walker to direct a new production of Vincenzo
Bellini's Norma (1831), which will be staged at La Fenice Opera House.

WideScreen Film and Music Video Festival. The event saw international and American films and music videos as well as a handful of Bahamian films.
For
the inaugural launch, he had help from the smash-hit Bahamian
documentary, "When Pigs Swim", directed by Bahamian Charlie Smith, when
one of the swimming piggies joined them on the red carpet...

Bahamas Governor General Signs National Tripartite Council Bill - Mar 5, 2015 - 11:56:28 AM
NASSAU, The Bahamas -- A move towards
enhancing labour relations in the country came to fruition with the signing of
the National Tripartite Council Bill 2014 into law by Her Excellency Dame
Marguerite Pindling, Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
Dame Marguerite signed the much-anticipated piece of legislation during a
Courtesy Call at Government House by delegates of the Ninth International
Labour Organization Meeting of the Caribbean Ministers of Labour on Tuesday,
March 3, 2015.

Grand Bahama Welcomes New Cruise Ferry ‘Bahama Mama’ - Mar 2, 2015 - 11:58:13 AM
FREEPORT, Grand Bahama
-- Freeport Harbour was a buzz of activity as the island welcomed its newest
ferry passenger vessel, Balearia's ‘Bahama Mama,’
Thursday.
The inauguration ceremony
was attended by a cross-section of the Grand Bahama community including
Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs. Joy Jibrilu,
parliamentarians, officials from the Grand Bahama Port Authority and
businessmen.

Freeport, Bahamas memorial held for Sir Jack Hayward - Feb 27, 2015 - 5:11:56 PM
Freeport, The Bahamas - A Memorial Service was held for Sir Jack A. Hayward,
Kt., OBE on February 23, 2015 at the Pro-Cathedral of Christ of
the King, East Atlantic Drive, Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. The Service was
officiated by Archdeacon Harry Bain. The Grand Bahama Children's Choir performed during the service.
In attendance was the Rt Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of The
Bahamas; Hon. Hubert Ingraham, Former Prime Minister; members of
parliament; local dignitaries; members of civic and charity groups;
friends and family.
Sir Jack, as he was affectionately known, passed away on
Tuesday, January 13, 2015, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 91 years...

On Friday, March 6th
over 170 countries from many Christian denominations will gather for
World Day of Prayer (WDP), a movement symbolized by an annual day of
celebration – the first Friday of March – to which all people are
welcome. Each year the women of a named country share their faith and
lives in the worship service with their sisters around the world. Last
year's service was carried by Egypt and the
2015 World Day of Prayer Service
was written by Bahamian women.
It is open to all faiths.
Where possible Bahamians living in the areas of the services have been
contacted and asked to speak, and or attend the celebration. The WDP
international organizing committee traveled to The Bahamas last year to initiate the 2015 event, and met with Minister of Social Services, the Hon. Melanie Griffin...

respected research publication that chronicles the evolution of the
nation’s premier tertiary education institution has been released,
tracing the historical highlights of The College of The Bahamas and
documenting its accomplishments in higher learning over a 40-year
period.
The International Journal of Bahamian Studies (IJBS) has published the second edition of its 20th Volume which commemorates
the 40th anniversary of The College of The Bahamas. The
volume captures The College’s evolution in administration, academic
schools and departments, collegiate culture, and scholarly life. It also
chronicles various aspects of COB’s involvement

Stem Cell Therapy Industry launched in The Bahamas - Jan 15, 2015 - 6:09:26 PM
NASSAU, The Bahamas - Prime Minister,
the Right Hon. Perry G. Christie, delivers a speech during a ceremony
marking the official launch of the Stem Cell Therapy Industry in The
Bahamas. The event was held on Wednesday evening, January 14, at Melia
Nassau Beach Resort.
In 2013 the government passed the Stem Cell
Research and Therapy Act 2013; and in 2014 the Stem Cell Research and
Therapy Regulations were officially brought into force.
According to
the Prime Minister, the experts involved in the newly introduced
industry will ensure the highest professional standards...

Sir Jack Hayward dies in Florida at 91 - Jan 15, 2015 - 11:58:10 AM
Honourary chairman and co-owner of the Grand
Bahama Port Authority, Sir Jack Hayward passed away on January 13th,
2015 at the age of 91. He had been unwell for several months and died
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Fondly known as 'Union Jack'
for his philanthropic work Sir Jack was also the former owner of
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC who today released the following statement:
"Wolves
would like to extend its deepest and most sincere condolences to Sir
Jack’s wife, Lady Hayward, his companion of many years, Patti Bloom, and
all his family and friends at home and across the world.
