Team Bahamas set to compete at World Juniors this week - Mar 18, 2019 - 1:15:20 PM

The Girls Competition begin on Monday at The World Juniors Tennis Championships.  Participating are top juniors in the U14 category from the region including countries such as El Salvador, Curacao, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Honduras, Bermuda,  Dominican Republic, Haiti, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Trinidad & Tobago and Suriname.

The event is being  held at Centro Nacional de Tenis, Parque del Este in the Dominican Republic...

As part of their mandate to support organizations that focus on Youth and Sports, the GBPA Conchman Triathlon began their donations with the Grand Bahama Amateur Athletic Association (GBAAA).   The GBAAA uses all its donations to help purchase track and field equipment as well as cover the athletes’ travel expenses to Nassau and other islands for competitions.

In Day 3 of competition in Santo Domingo at The World Juniors Tennis Competition The Bahamas faced El Salvador.

Anthony Burrows Jr. was up first. He came out strong winning the first set 6 0. He lost the second set 6 7 but was able to get the win in the third set 6 3. Up next Michael Major Jr. played well but lost in two sets 1 6 2 6.  The doubles would be the determinant factor on which one of the countries would get the overall win...
UB Women’s Volleyball team searches for players - Mar 13, 2019 - 1:15:39 PM

The University of The Bahamas women’s volleyball program will host a recruitment exercise this weekend—Friday March 16 and Saturday March 17—at the Kendal Isaacs gym.  The sessions start 6:30 both nights.

Coaches and administrators will be evaluating players ahead of the upcoming volleyball season.

Women’s head volleyball coach Raymond Wilson said he’s looking for a diamond in the rough who is looking for a quality education at The University of the Bahamas...

Lima 2019 has named LATAM Airlines as the Official Airline of this summer’s Pan American and Parapan American Games. LATAM will be responsible for flying thirteen countries’ delegations of athletes, National Olympic Committee representatives and technical officials to and from Lima this summer.

The agreement was signed on Monday 11 March by Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus, Panam Sports President Neven Ilic, and LATAM Airlines General Manager Manuel van Oordt...

It was a tough fight for The Bahamas on Day 1 at The World Juniors Tennis Competition in Santo Domingo.

The Bahamas played Costa Rica but lost in singles matches.  Anthony Burrows was up first against Arayer of Costa Rica. He played hard but lost 2-6 3-6. Michael Major was up next against Quiros. He won the first set convincingly 2-6, and lost second and third sets 4-6 2-6. In the doubles matchup the Bahamas duo of Anthony and Dentry Mortimer fought but lost to Costa Rica 6-7 (6), 3-6...

With approximately five months to go until the start of the Pan American and Parapan American Games, Lima 2019 has inaugurated its first new sporting venue – the baseball stadium in the Villa Maria del Triunfo district of Lima.

At the heart of the event, which took place this Saturday 10 March, was the Peruvian Baseball National Team who conducted a training session at the new state-of-the-art facility. The baseball stadium features a World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) approved field, changing rooms and seats for 1,800 spectators...

After training and competing in Mexico, Israel, France and Bulgaria in February, Judo national champion Cynthia Rahming competed at the 2019 Peru Continental Open. She earned a fifth place finish defeating Kiara Arango of Peru along the way before losing in a controversial match to Shadi Ebrahimi in the medal rounds.

"The journey has been tough," said Cynthia. "It has taken me years to win at this level but I have not given up! I intend to win at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and I am grateful to God, my family, coaches and supporters who continue to train me and support me..."

UB Athletics has hired former track and field national team hurdler Ednal Rolle as the first full-time head coach at the institution. The internationally certified coach takes reins of the program starting March 4, 2019.

“We are excited to have such a high-caliber coach such as Ednal join the UB athletics team as the first full-time coach,” Athletics Director Kimberley Rolle said. “This is the first in what is anticipated to be several strategic hirings over the next two to three years to ensure consistency in recruitment, retention, and high level performances from varsity teams.”

Senior officials from the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee have concluded a three-day visit to the UK this week to learn and apply lessons learnt from London 2012 to Lima in order to regenerate large parts of the Peruvian capital. 

As part of the visit, Lima 2019 Carlos Neuhaus, together with the newly elected Mayor of Lima Jorge Muñoz, toured London 2012 venues and met with officials who were influential in delivering one of the most successful Olympic Games in history...
Mingoes Basketball hosts open tryouts this weekend - Feb 28, 2019 - 2:25:42 PM

The UB Mingoes men’s basketball team will hold open tryouts 8am Saturday March 2, 2019 at The Kendal Issacs Gymnasium.

Coaches and administrators will be evaluating players as the team loses two starters to graduation at the end of this season.

Men’s basketball head coach Bacchus Rolle said the two graduating seniors have played big roles on the team and he’s looking to replace them in the system.

Swift Athletics Head Coach Andrew Tynes said many sporting medals and trophies may well be in The Bahamas’ future thanks in part to the well of athletic potential within the B3A-sanctioned track and field club.

Tynes said, “Swift Athletics got its start four years ago. We normally take on about 40 kids but this year we have 55, and the amount of talent in that pool is undeniable.”

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s basketball team lost to the Discount Distributors Rockets for the second time this season 88-81 Wednesday night at the C.I. Gibson gym

Lerecus Armbrister lead the Rockets with 18 points and 4 assists. Georgio Walkes scored 17 and 8 rebounds while David Taylor scored 16 to go along with 5 rebounds.

Kemsy Sylvester had 29 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for the Mingoes. Romero Cornish scored 19 points and 4 rebounds and Travaughn Nicholls had 10 points and 3 rebounds...

Team Bahamas wins 3 0 against Panama in Jr. Fed Cup action.  The three member team of Peyton Anderson, Gabrielle Simms and Perjae Major played exceptionally well to get a clean sweep.

After coming extremely close in their previous two matches against Trinidad and Tobago and Curacao, Bahamas achieved its first team win for the competition in El Salvador...

Bahamian Champions Cynthia Rahming -57Kg, Sasha Ingraham +78Kg and Joshua Mcfall (-73kg) recently attended a week-long training camp in Cancun Mexico with Head Coach Oneysi Portorreal-Pons. The purpose of the camp was to prepare hopefuls for the upcoming Pan American Games in July.

"These are the athletes most likely to qualify" said Coach Pons "because they are doing the work!" He went on further to say that "the camp gave me everything I needed to evaluate them and take them to the next level...

Junior Fed Cup is an international team event in junior female tennis (16 and under age category). Competitions were launched by the ITF in 1985  and every year nations enter regional qualifying events with the winners progressing to the Finals...
