The overwhelming support shown for the GBPA Conchman Triathlon last November, from triathletes near and far, has prompted the organizing committee to begin early registration for the increasingly popular competition scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd on Taino Beach in Freeport.

The GBAWC’s 16th Annual Golf Classic takes place February 23d at The Reef Course, with two $25,000 cash prizes for hole-in-one winners. Thirty five years ago, four industrious young women had the vision and desire to form an alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated on Grand Bahama. Each having graduated from universities in the United States, these women returned home to Grand Bahama eager to enhance the quality of life for women and their families in The Bahamas and globally through community service, civil and social action. A crowd pleasing highlight of the annual Grand Bahama Port Authority Conchman Triathlon is the children’s Iron Kids Competition. The event is open to kids up to twelve years old and gives them the opportunity to display their athleticism in a mini version of the full triathlon.

One of the autumn highlights for GBIBs was Cornell University's "Big Day" event on October 6th where more than 17000 birders in 146 countries observed 6136 species of birds during a 24 hour period. This number represented more than half of the world's species and was the highest count for a single day of October birding ever! With so may endemic species in our region, the West Indies which includes the Bahamas, are essential to this world-wide birding effort.
