G.B. Chamber President speaks to Sunrise Rotary Club - Jan 15, 2015 - 2:40:55 PM

On January 1, 2015, the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas rolled-out the Country’s New Value Added Tax Regime against a tidal wave of opposition, trepidation, and scepticism. The Government argues that such tax reforms were necessary, inter alia to broaden the country’s tax base and to address the vexing issues of a burgeoning national debt which has now reached $6 billion and recurrent deficits in the order of $500 million. The reaction from the Country’s taxpayers in the immediate aftermath of what has been described by many as being a haphazard and ineffectual roll-out, ranges from outrage and disbelief to a disconcerting apathy that the world did not come to an end last Thursday and that we the taxpayers just have suck it up...

Rotary Club of Freeport supports the Grand Bahama Children’s Home - Nov 4, 2014 - 1:10:04 PM

S-RCF-GBCH.jpg
FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- It is the intent to have a new president at the helm of Rotary Clubs every Rotary year. This allows for variety in new leadership during the period beginning July 1st through to June 30th of the following year. It is every president’s desire to establish a signature project and be remembered by that specific project.

President Queen Rolle and the membership of the Rotary Club of Freeport planned and executed a successful fundraiser which took the form of a wine and cheese tasting earlier this month. The goal was to earmark proceeds from this event to funding hurricane shutters for a building at the Grand Bahama Children’s Home (GBCH), and on Saturday, October 25th, the Rotary Club...

The event is a 5km (3.1 mile) run or walk which leads participants on a course with various colour stations, which saturate them in colour. The non-toxic powder brightens participants from head to toe, many of which are already wearing bright and colourful costumes.

There are no winners in the event, and no official time is kept for the participants. Gaylord Taylor speaks on fraud at Rotary Club of Grand Bahama Sunrise - Aug 12, 2014 - 5:07:12 PM

card.jpg
Freeport, Grand Bahama - Fraud is a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain; as a legal construct fraud is both a civil wrong and criminal one. In The Bahamas, fraud is very prevalent and in fact is on the increase as fraudulent schemes become more complex and diversified. Retail stores and financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies are frequently targeted. The various methods of fraud make it a very attractive method of criminality for enterprising and intelligent individuals.

Fraud rarely attracts the full attention of law enforcement especially in The Bahamas where the common belief is “Thief from thief and God smiles” as most citizens look on this as a victimless crime. In recent years fraud within The Bahamas has affected they so called “common man” as fraudsters look for susceptible targets for their schemes.
