Google implements new privacy policy - Mar 1, 2012 - 1:33:21 AM

Screen_shot_2012-02-29_at_10.35.50_PM.png
Google's new Privacy Policy goes into affect on March 1st, 2012. Google's website states:

Our updated Privacy Policy takes effect today, March 1. As you use our products one thing will be clear: it’s the same Google experience that you’re used to, with the same controls.

And because we’re making these changes, over time we’ll be able to improve our products in ways that help our users get the most from the web.

While we’ve undertaken the most extensive user education campaign in our history to explain the coming changes, we know there has been a fair amount of chatter and confusion.

Online Piracy Legislation Gets Vote of Confidence From Sen. Harry Reid - Jan 18, 2012 - 1:01:48 PM

Screen_shot_2012-01-18_at_10.03.44_AM.png
Jan. 18, 2012 - On a recent episode of "Meet the Press," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid threw his support behind advancing legislation to curb online piracy. Both chambers of Congress have drafted legislation to address online piracy from foreign websites, but both bills have faced strong public outcry that has put their chances of passage in doubt without significant changes.

The Senate is considering the Protect IP Act ( S 968), known as PIPA, while the House is considering the Stop Online Piracy Act ( HR 3261), known as SOPA. The Senate is expected to vote on PIPA on Jan. 24, and Reid has...

Facebook to add Skype video chat - Jul 7, 2011 - 8:37:08 AM

Skype-FB.JPG
(Reuters) - Facebook will add Skype video chat to its pages, aiming to spice up the appeal of the world's No. 1 Internet social networking service while fending off increased competition from Google.

The agreement, announced by Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg at the company's Palo Alto, California, headquarters on Wednesday, deepens the company's cooperation with Microsoft Corp, which is in the process of buying Skype to build up its web presence.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has hit a record 750 million users...

Facebook Nears 500-Million-User Mark, Prepares Self-Loving "Facebook Stories" - Jul 22, 2010 - 1:02:43 AM
socialnetwork.jpg
FastCompany.com - When the first official poster for the Facebook-themed movie The Social Network was unveiled last month, some of us wondered about that official tagline. "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies." Catchy! But does Facebook have that many? The last number quoted was 400 million, at the f8 conference a few months ago.

Facebook revealed to All Things D that they do expect to announce the joining of the 500 millionth Facebook member sometime this week. It was bound to happen, of course, but it's a pretty stunning number of users. Just one year ago, the quoted membership was half that.

So what's Facebook doing to celebrate this milestone? Turns out they're having a bit of a love-in, creating a separate website within Facebook to show off the "Facebook Stories" users have been submitting over the years...

Twitter Now the World's Fastest Growing Search Engine - Jul 7, 2010 - 10:45:08 AM

biz-stone_.jpg
What is your search engine of choice? Google? Yahoo? Bing? Try Twitter.

According to cofounder Biz Stone, who spoke yesterday at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Twitter now reaches some 800 million search queries per day. That's over 24 billion searches per month, more than Bing (4.1 billion) and Yahoo (9.4 billion) combined.

While Stone's company is still a long way off from Google, which supports around 88 billion search queries per month, Twitter is quickly catching up. Since last April, Twitter searches are up 33%. To put that in perspective, a study by Nielsen last year concluded that Bing was the fastest-growing search engine in the U.S. after it ballooned over 22%. Now it seems Twitter has taken the title...

Twitter re-designs their home page - Mar 31, 2010 - 8:58:29 AM

TwitterHomeSM.jpg
Twitter's new homepage, aside from being simply more aesthetically pleasing than the old one, does a much better job of showing new users what the service is actually about. The first thing you'll notice upon visiting the new page is that Twitter has put its most popular topics, tweets, and users front and center.

Right in the middle is now a "Top Tweets" section that dynamically updates. Twitter uses a custom algorithm to decide what these are, often due to popularity or general interest. On the left is now a sampling of high-profile users, from celebrities to publications to news outlets to just normal people. Hovering over those icons gives more information about that user, including their latest tweet...

(VIDEO) Google to Buy One Company Per Month - Mar 16, 2010 - 12:45:52 PM

GoogleBeast.jpg
Google has an answer to the pesky economy and to getting over its tiff with Apple. The company says it will begin purchasing one small company a month.

"Acquisitions are turned on again at Google and we are doing our normal maneuvers, which is small companies," Eric Schmidt told Reuters. "My estimate would be one-a-month acquisitions and these are largely in lieu of hiring. There may be larger acquisitions, but they really are unpredictable."

The Silicon Valley search company has a long history of buying smaller companies but Schmidt froze Google's wallet earlier this year because he said the market was too expensive.

The company said the move is a sign that the worst of the economic woes the tech industry has been dealing with is behind them...

Work Smart: Mastering Your Social Media Life - Feb 11, 2010 - 4:02:21 PM

WorkSmartLogo.jpg
FastCompany.com writes: When you're active on the Web, keeping up with all your online accounts can feel like a full-time job. You want your high school friends to find you on Facebook, your co-workers to follow you on Twitter, and business associates to find you on LinkedIn. But there are only so many hours in the day, and too many Web sites to check in and update. The good news is that you don't have to hire a personal assistant to update all your profiles. With the right strategy, you can manage multiple accounts with minimal effort. Here's how.

First, make social network activity come to you. Pick your primary channel of communication and route all your notifications from various services to come through it. I call this funneling. For example...

Facebook Begins Rolling Out New Home Page Design - Feb 9, 2010 - 6:24:33 AM

FacebookSM.jpg
Facebook is now fully launching the long-planned redesign, with 80 million users getting it tonight — that’s 80 million of the now 400 million people using the site, the company says. The new design is basically what we’ve been examining in detail since the first test screenshots appeared last October.

Parts of the site that were formerly located in the bottom toolbar — bookmarks, notifications, chat — are now being moved up into the left-hand navigation column on the homepage, or into the top navigation bar. Here are some more details gleaned from Facebook this evening.
