PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands; Tuesday, May 13th, 2014 – Over the weekend, footballers within the Women’s National Team of the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) took part in Sports Media Training.

Sports Media Training is not exclusive to footballers, but a useful tool for all athletes, coaches or team executives. Preparing athletes for interviews and press conferences; monitoring athletes social media pages and educating them about the responsibilities associated therewith is all apart Sports Media Training, as it is vital in preparing today’s footballers to be on message on and off the field and how to present themselves positively in the global media sphere.

“The intensity and media scrutiny that accompany every word an athlete says, what they do, the photos or comments they posts online, can always be used in the 24/7 news cycle. This combined with the explosion of social networking sites has greatly affected the perception of professional and amateur athletes”, said Courtney Robinson, Media and Press Director at the TCIFA, who hosted the workshop.

“The reality is that controversial headlines sell newspapers, grab TV viewers and posts on social networking sites can go viral. This can be devastating to athletic programs, coaches and athletes. A player having a positive image, and that of their team goes a long way in the lucrative business that is professional football. To this regard it was important that they learn from early that what they say or do can have an immediate and lasting impact on their future careers,” added Robinson.

The goals of the workshop were as follows: basic interviewing techniques; tricks and tips for spokespeople in all types of media interview scenarios; understanding what makes a successful interview; appreciate the importance of preparation and practice; understand how to use vocal intonation and body language; knowing how to build self confidence and prepare for interviews; being familiar with media jargon; interview do’s and don’ts; state shifting and lastly, role play.

Of the workshop, Candace Hanchell, Team Manager and President of the Women’s Football League said: “We saw it vital to have our national team players undertake the sports media training.  Training both on and off the field are vital elements of success.  Mr. Robinson’s training was well received and our players walked away with a greater sense of confidence and are better equipped to deal with the media.”
