Turks and Caicos Islands - DDME and its regional partners will be running simulation exercises and Public Awareness activities for Tsunamis and other fast-onset disasters during the month of March.

This information is being issued to educate the public about the various hazards and how to respond ahead of a Major Regional Drill scheduled for later in the month.

TCIG is not able to tell the date of the drill, but TCIG is planning a National Drill to test the TCI’s preparedness and wants all communities and schools involved in the process as well as the wider TCI population and media to be prepared for the challenges that come with events like these.

To aid in the process, attached is a publication from the Caribbean Disaster Management Agency (CDEMA) the regional body with responsibility for monitoring and coordinating disaster relief in member states. This document will help to understand the terminologies with their meanings.

TCIG is also making the technical experts available for interviews on the warning signs of a tsunami warning and how to respond, as well as what to do when an earthquake strikes as they do, without warnings.

Interim arrangements in reference to our dissemination plans: Radio Turks and Caicos broadcasts to all of the TCI. Its reach and value as a partner in dissemination is underscored by the fact that one needs only a receiver to pick up the signal; that it is manned at all times and that by virtue of its ownership, all are able access human resources from TCIG.

RTC will be TCIG's primary medium for dissemination. The service will be used in addition to emails, faxes and text messages.  It was agreed further, that a radio and fax machine would be among the tools responders and media houses would use in our efforts to get to the “last mile” i.e. the man in the street.

Also attached is a copy of my assessment of locally available communications tools as well as for your information, a link to Communicating Disasters, a must-read for media practitioners others who want to understand what it means to cover a major fast-onset hazard.
