TURKS & CAICOS - The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports & Library Services wishes to advise the general public that public schools will reopen on Monday, 8th September 2014. The 2014-2015 academic year was schedule to begin on Monday, 1st September, however, with the passage of Tropical Storm Cristobal and the resulting flooding across much of the country, several students and teachers have been affected thus, hampering a smooth opening. After consultations with school officials a decision was taken to delay the reopening of schools by one week.

The Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring that all schools are in readiness to receive students and welcome teachers.  The delay will also help to ensure that students and teachers affected by the floodwaters are prepared to access the curriculum and continue the formal teaching and learning exchange.

The Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports & Library Services, said “the health and safety of our students and teachers remain our number one priority; and we must ensure that the Environmental Health Department, and Public Works Departments are able to comprehensively complete the required works not only at our facilities but also the surrounding areas in which they are located”.

The Deputy Premier, looks forward to welcoming all new and returning students to our facilities, and asks the general public to note again, that the 2014/15 school year for public schools will officially commence on 8th September 2014.

Turks & Caicos Islands Government continues recovery efforts throughout Islands

Turks & Caicos Islands Government (TCIG) is continuing its efforts in aiding its Islands recovery from the impact caused by Tropical Storm Cristobal that struck this past weekend.

The Minister of Border Control, Hon. Ricardo Donhue Gardiner and Minister of Finance, Hon. Washington C. Misick revisited the island of North Caicos and Middle Caicos today, again accompanied by the North Caicos District Commissioner, Donna Gardiner.

“Since yesterday, we’ve been able to mobilize equipment to clear a by-pass road to gain land access from Bottle Creek into Kew,” said Hon. Misick.  “Public Works Department along with resident volunteers have been working tirelessly and should have this completed by Thursday, 28 August 2014.

“They’ve also had success with pumping in two other flooded locations along the main highway on Bottle Creek and due to this; more places can be accessed in larger vehicles like trucks.”

"I am glad that I could be over here today to represent the Government in their continued efforts to see these recovery operations.”

He added “The citizens of North and Middle Caicos remain incredibly motivated and resilient.  They have continued to offer their support and we are all grateful.”

The following updates have been provided:

  • The Ministry of Health has acquired three (3) additional vector management personnel to help combat the influx of mosquitoes expected
  • Ministry of Health has made arrangements for the provision of healthcare support in Kew until recovery operations are resolved
  • Land Survey and Public Works Departments have been working closely together to organise the completion of by-pass roads in North Caicos to aid in safe passage around flooded areas.
  • Red Cross and DDME have been working closely with the two families that were displaced by the storm, providing necessities where needed.  They have since been placed with family members.
  • Regularly scheduled Domestic flights have commenced at Providenciales International Airport.
  • Assessments will continue, and regular updates are expected to be provided by the TCIG.
