PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands, Monday, August 25th, 2014 – Tropical storm Cristobal’s passage through the Turks and Caicos Islands has left a trail of cancelled and delayed flights due to its impact on the islands. Flight operations at Providenciales International Airport were suspended at 10:09 a.m. local on Sunday.
Heavy rain, strong winds, low visibility and cloud ceiling continue to occur, preventing safe operations into the country’s main port of entry. The adverse weather condition began late on Friday and continues unabated.
It is reported that up to mid-day on Sunday, the total rainfall since the start of the stormy weather was in the vicinity of 4.8 inches. All but one international carrier cancelled their operations out of Providenciales due to the adverse weather.
In a comment on the suspended flight operation, Airport Authority’s CEO John Smith said “we remain committed to serving the flying public in the safest possible manner and will thus resume flight operations when all the relevant components of the weather fall below limits that allow for safe flight.”
John Smith added that there are unfounded reports in the public domain that suggests that the airport is closed due to some leaks in the terminal. With the ongoing construction in the main terminal building, there have been a few breaches due to the large amount of rainfall and heavy winds. These are being monitored and managed as any other building that is similarly under construction.
The board and management of the Airports Authority apologize for any inconvenience caused and acknowledge that the suspension of flight operation is due to reasons beyond their control. Operations personnel are in place and standing ready to resume flight operation as soon as it is practical to do so.
The Airports Authority is responsible for the provision of air traffic services in accordance with the standards and recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the world’s governing aviation body.
