U. S. presidential
hopeful Mitt Romney's offshore investments and whether they help him
reduce his U. S. taxes will be analyzed at the upcoming OffshoreAlert
Conference.
"How High Net Worth
Individuals like Romney and big corporations like Bain Capital legally
use offshore vehicles to maximize profitability and minimize risk will
be among the main focuses of the conference," said OffshoreAlert
publisher David Marchant.
"What tax loopholes,
if any, are they taking advantage of, how are their offshore vehicles

OFCs 'not to blame' for global financial woes, says ex-regulator - Jan 16, 2012 - 1:09:00 PM
MIAMI BEACH, FL -
"Irresponsible" governments, regulators and banks are mainly responsible
for the global recession, not Offshore Financial Centers, said Tim
Ridley, former Chairman of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.
"It
is a myth that OFCs are primarily responsible for the recent financial
meltdowns," he told OffshoreAlert. "The harsh reality is that the US
meltdown resulted from an alliance between the politicians, the
regulators and the banks to provide cheap housing loans to those who
could never pay the loans back; and, in Europe the meltdown resulted
from the irresponsible policies..."

1 in 10 reverse mergers of Chinese firms on US stock exchanges "fraudulent" - Mar 29, 2011 - 1:30:12 PM
At
least 10% of Chinese companies that have gone public on stock
exchanges in the United States are engaged in fraud. The deals often
involve establishing offshore holding companies in the British Virgin
Islands, Cayman Islands, Samoa or another offshore jurisdiction in
order to conceal illegal conduct.
The startling claim, following extensive research, was made to OffshoreAlert by Sharesleuth.com, an investigative news web-site controlled by well-known American businessman Mark Cuban.
"Upwards of 400 Chinese companies have gone public on U.S. exchanges through reverse mergers," says Chris Carey, Editor and President of Sharesleuth.com. "We've identified at least 40 deals – or fully 10 percent – that have involved some degree of fraud or deception...

More offshore banks can expect UBS-type treatment, says former IRS attorney - Mar 15, 2011 - 11:03:32 AM
The IRS clampdown on Swiss bank UBS could be the tip of the
iceberg in its fight against tax evasion and financial institutions in
other offshore jurisdictions might be targeted for similar treatment.
It's
all part of the push for "full tax transparency", says Jonathan
Sambur, a former IRS attorney who now specializes in Tax Transactions
in the Washington, DC office of Mayer Brown law firm.
"Recent
public statements by U.S. regulators indicate that U.S. tax avoidance
and evasion is not limited to Switzerland," Mr. Sambur told

OFCs are not information black-holes - Mar 5, 2011 - 2:02:56 PM
It
seems to be a commonly-held belief in the world's major countries that
Offshore Financial Centers are impenetrable fortresses when it comes
to obtaining information for criminal and civil investigations.
But the opposite is reality, said Jeremy Walton, a Cayman Islands-based partner of prominent offshore law firm Appleby.
"It
is a myth that offshore financial centers are information black-holes
and that it is practically impossible to obtain information or relief
for the victims of fraud," he told OffshoreAlert.

US Government Legislation: What's next for Offshore Financial Centers? - Feb 28, 2011 - 9:12:22 PM
For many years, U. S.
Senator Carl Levin has been a thorn in the side of Offshore Financial
Centers through highly-publicized critical comments, investigations into
alleged tax evasion and money laundering and proposed legislation aimed
at curbing legal loopholes.
The Chairman of the Senate's
Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations is, perhaps, best known in the
offshore world through his sponsorship of the 'Stop Tax Haven Abuse
Act'.
So what's the status of this anti-offshore initiative and
what else does Congress have in store for OFCs and U. S. nationals who
transact business in them?

Bank transparency is a 'myth', claims anti-offshore author - Feb 23, 2011 - 12:13:08 PM
Mr. Shaxson will be
expanding on his views of "tax havens" at the
9th Annual OffshoreAlert
Conference, which will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach in Miami
Beach, Florida on
April 4-6, 2011.
He will participate
in a session entitled
'OFCs or Tax Havens: Good or Bad for the Global
Economy'. Others, including former Cayman Islands Monetary Authority
Chairman Tim Ridley, will argue that offshore financial centers actually
benefit the international financial system.
Far from being
"dead", as is popularly believed, bank secrecy is actually still
"vibrant", according to the author of a new book on offshore "tax
havens"...

Offshore centers no longer US taxpayers’ friend, says defense attorney - Mar 31, 2009 - 11:31:11 PM
The days when U. S. taxpayers could rely on offshore jurisdictions to stymie tax investigations by the IRS are long gone, says a criminal tax defense attorney.
"It no longer takes months or even years for U.S. authorities to obtain cooperation and tax/financial information from foreign jurisdictions," said Robert Bernhoft, whose clients have included actor Wesley Snipes and 'Girls Gone Wild' video producer Joe Francis. "New treaty provisions and Tax Information Exchange Agreements have significantly expedited the process.
"If you have offshore involvements and get audited, you can no longer play the waiting game and see what leads the IRS will follow up. You need to take defensive action immediately..."

OFCs are "scapegoats" for the economic crisis, says pro-offshore ex-diplomat - Mar 17, 2009 - 6:32:07 AM
Major countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom are simply "passing the buck" by blaming Offshore Financial Centers for the global economic crisis and taking steps to close them down.
That is the view of Sir Ronald Sanders, a former High Commissioner to the UK for Antigua and Barbuda and currently a business consultant, specializing in the Caribbean, who will also be speaking at the OffshoreAlert Conference on April 26th in Miami.
"Lax regulation" by OECD member countries is to blame for the economic mess, yet it is OFCs who are being made to suffer as new legislation targeting them is prepared by the world's biggest countries, Sanders told OffshoreAlert.

The 'New Reality': Swiss banks must stop assisting criminals, says attorney - Mar 10, 2009 - 12:17:50 AM
Switzerland should rely on the quality of its banking system to compete for business globally, not simply a willingness to turn a blind eye to illegal conduct.
That is the view of Andrew Weinstein who will be speaking at the at the 7th Annual OffshoreAlert Financial Due Diligence Conference, which is being held in Miami Beach, on April 26-28. Weinstein is a partner with Holland + Knight law firm in Miami who has more than 30 years' combined government and private sector experience handling complex tax planning and compliance matters for ultra high net worth individuals, including representing them in civil and criminal tax matters before the IRS and U. S. Department of Justice.
