Freeport, Bahamas – The Polymers International Ltd. Reactors showed up in full force at the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Freeport Office Wednesday to claim their title as the 2016 Beach Olympics Champions and transported the floating trophy to its new home.

After all the trash talking between the teams up until game day Saturday, April 16, one team stood out and fought their way through rain, sand, hoops and hurdles to victory on Taino Beach during the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Kickoff Weekend festivities.

Determined to make a good showing, even with a smaller group this year, Polymers took part in the obstacle course, volleyball, 3 on 3 basketball, tug of war, 60m race and the Junkanoo bed race.

“The camaraderie this year was great and the will to win energized us to pull it together this year and we made a good showing,” Team Leader Gea Robinson said. “It was so unreal because we were just hoping to place and do better than last year. We wanted to finish every race and be a part of everything. We went out there and did just that, just hoping to get second or third place and when they called to say that we won, it was a state of shock.”

While celebratory plans have not yet materialized, Robinson said they have a special spot for the prized floating trophy and a special place on the wall where the public will be able to view it all times.

The Grand Bahama Health Services Shock Wavers, the Grand Bahama Port Authority Regulators, the Ministry for Grand Bahama Invaders, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force Destroyers, Bahama Rock Escavators and the National Insurance Board Royals also took part in this year’s games.

Beach Activities Co-coordinator Jacquie Rolle is still reeling from the excitement of the games over the weekend.

“We have our official winners. Polymers are our official winners for the 2016 Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Beach Olympics. They came out, they had a small team but they got the job done. They were very competitive,” Rolle said.

“Public Hospitals Authority is our 2015 reigning champions. They came out, but it didn’t work in their favor. So congrats to Polymers; not only did they win the overall, they also won the bed design. They came up with a spectacular design and they took home that trophy as well.”

An impressive number also showed up in the rain for the 5K run early Saturday morning. Making it to the finish line first in the non-company category was Melvin Rolle. Danita Nixon took home the second place prize.

Second place in the 2016 Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Beach Olympics went to the Public Hospitals Authority (Grand Bahama Health Services) and the Grand Bahama Port Authority secured third place.

Shorrell Dames, co-coordinator of Beach Olympics and 5k was pleased with the level of participation from corporate Grand Bahama.

“This years’ Beach Olympics was filled with a huge amount of competition and the support from corporate Grand Bahama has been wonderful. The committee and I are grateful for the participation of every company and those individuals from the public who took part in the 5k race” Dames said.

Ginger Moxey, Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Grand Bahama Kickoff event coordinator, congratulated the winners and noted that over the last two years the games have “grown by leaps and bounds.”

“Everyone is just so excited about it. The intensity of the rivalry is just something that I am happy about. We’re getting the requests to have it more than once a year and to have basketball games in the gym leading up to the event and have The Grand Life Dancers come out during half time,” she revealed.

“All of this excitement, all of this buzz. We know that it is something that is greater than we even imagined. So we’re going to continue to evaluate it and enhance it to get it to that next level. We want to say thank you again to corporate Grand Bahama because you showed up in full force and you gave back. Again, part proceeds is in aid of Grand Bahama Special Olympics and so we thank you for what you’ve done to assist with Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival as you give back to our community.”
