New York, NY -
The documentary feature film
Artists of the Bahamas is part
of the selection for the
African Diaspora Film Festival in New York
City. The film will be screened on
November 29, 2009, at 3:00pm at the
Thalia Theatre, Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway, near 95th Street. This will be its only screening at the festival.
Directed and produced by award-winning duo Karen Arthur and
Thomas Neuwirth,
Artists of the Bahamas
is a documentary film that explores the lives and works of key visual
artists whose talents contributed to the initial art movement in the
Bahamas. The featured artists are extremely prolific and articulate.
Interviews, still photos and archive footage are inter-cut with images
of the artists’ works to explore the creative process that goes into
their paintings, woodcuts, sculptures, and installations, from the
realistic, to the abstract, to the naïve.
Famed actor, Sidney Poitier introduces his fellow Bahamian artists:
Amos Ferguson, Kendal Hanna, Max Taylor, Brent Malone, Dave Smith,
Eddie Minnis, Stan Burnside, Jackson Burnside, Antonius Roberts, John
Beadle, and John Cox. They each explore their techniques &
disciplines from their homes, studios, and various locations in the
Bahamas that have been instrumental to their art. The film ends with
the Festival of Junkanoo, an African/Bahamian ceremony, which has been
the artistic inspiration that has fueled many of their creations. The
soundtrack for the film includes compositions by the legendary Bahamian
musician “Peanuts” Taylor and young virtuoso drummer Ruppa-Pumpum.
This screening also celebrates the life of Amos Ferguson, also known
as the Grandfather of Bahamian Art (whose artwork is featured above),
who passed away this October [also see previous post Bahamian artist Amos Ferguson dies].
