Bahamian filmmaker wins at the Africa Movie Academy Awards

Organisers of the prestigious annual Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) have celebrated 10 years of the awards. The capital city of Bayelsa State, Yenagoa, Nigeria became the centre of attraction as movie personalities stormed the city for this year’s awards.

Of the 30 awards given, Bahamian filmmaker Kareem Mortimer won the AMAA 2014 Award for Best Diaspora Short with his film Passage. South Africa’s ‘Of Good Report’ was the biggest winner at the awards.

Passage centres around a group of Haitians locked in the hold of a fishing vessel being smuggled through The Bahamas into the USA. The story is focused on Sandrine, a 17-year-old girl who must hide the fact that her brother Etienne is sick in order to save his life. Kareem J. Mortimer, Trevite Willis, Lucy Hannah, and Marc Boothe are the Producers, Kareem J. Mortimer is also the Director and Screenwriter.

Kareem J. Mortimer is a Bahamian filmmaker that has worked globally. Over the past five years he has won over 30 awards for his film projects, has had his work distributed in over forty countries and reviewed by the New York Times, Variety, IndieWire and The Hollywood Reporter.
