Nassau, Bahamas - On both the Boxing and New Year’s Holidays Bay Street exploded with the sights and sounds of our country’s premier cultural event. Throngs of Bahamians and visitors alike lined the streets into the wee hours to see the supreme craftsmanship of the various costumes and enjoy the musical and choreography stylings of their favorite groups.

In the months, weeks and days leading up to those two epic nights, members of the different Junkanoo groups were hard at work, preparing to present their various themes. Working well into the night and early morning Junkanoo group leaders were able to galvanize their members – many of whom sacrificed sleep, skipped meals and took time away from their families – all to ensure the perseveration and furtherance of a Bahamian holiday tradition.

At a time in this country’s timeline where we are inundated with influences from around the world, the preservation of things that are truly Bahamian is critical. As a people we must all do our part to ensure that this cultural expression is protected, and the men and women responsible for being its caretakers and advocates, are protected. With that in mind, the DNA sought to lend support to the various groups in our own small way. On Friday December 30th members of the party’s core executive team led by Party Leader Branville McCartney delivered hot meals and cold beverages to 13 Junkanoo shacks across the island of New Providence; a gesture which was well received by these hard working curators of the Bahamian cultural experience.

The DNA would like to congratulate all the participating Junkanoo organizations including One Family who were declared the winners of the Boxing Day Parade as well as the winners of the New Year’s parade: The Valley Boys. As has been our proud history, the cultural community of Junkanoo did not disappoint and all their hard work culminated in the supreme spectacle which we were all able to enjoy.
