Thousands of dollars of fine art, collectibles, jewelry and extraordinary experiences will be up for bidding when the Historic Bahamas Foundation Treasures & Trinkets online auction goes live today.

The auction, auction.bahamaslocal.com, is the lead-up to the Historic Bahamas Foundation Fair, Trinkets & Treasures, set for February 5-6 on the grounds of Collins House, Shirley Street and Collins Ave. Proceeds from the fair will benefit several organizations and provide funds for the repair of one of the country’s most historic sites, The Hermitage in Cat Island.

“When we first started meeting last year, people were calling it a national patio sale,” said Trinkets Fair Chairman Diane Phillips. “And in a way, it is – but if it is a patio or garage sale, it raises the standard to a level that may be unparalleled in the country’s history because the treasures, trinkets and experiences that are going to be available include rare books, original oil paintings by famed artists, collectibles including a page of 1968 stamps, incredible experiences like a weekend at Grand Isle Villas in Exuma and another at Albany, several dining experiences at Atlantis, a number of gifts from John Bull and generous vouchers from friends like Kelly’s Home Centre and Super Value. One generous donor even contributed six work-out sessions with a fitness guru and others have shipped in handmade furniture.”

According to Phillips, the generosity of donors has been “amazing and heart-warming.”

The fair, originally set for November, was rescheduled when Hurricane Joaquin ravaged the southeastern islands, creating an urgent need for immediate relief and longer term assistance.

“Some of the organizations involved in hurricane relief, including the Bahamas Red Cross, will benefit from the fair,” said Phillips. Other groups include Links, Historic Charles Towne, PMH Foundation, Blairwood Academy with programs for Gambier and Adelaide Primary students with special needs, the Bahamas National Feeding Network, Cofambia, Bahamas Sickle Cell Association, Prince of Peace Lodge, Bahamas Special Olympics, and others. Each participating organization is able to bring goods – furniture, art, collectibles, antiques, books or other decorative items – and offer them for sale with 70% of the proceeds going directly to the organization and 30% to the restoration of The Hermitage, particularly the stone steps and entry to the architectural wonder that is located at the highest peak in The Bahamas, Mt. Alvernia at 206 feet.

The fair opens on Friday, February 5 at 10 and runs until 2, opens again from 4-7 pm and all day Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. There will be live music, bouncing castle, marching bands and food area with Rotary, Mortimer’s Kitchen and local vendors. $1 admission for children and adults.

New items will be added to the online auction over the next week with a live auction hosted by Ed Fields set for 2 pm on February 6.
