Freeport, Bahamas - Spring is here, and there is a new feeling in the air. Trees and bushes are in bloom, there is a riot of colour everywhere you look, and the sun is warm on our backs as we look forward to the new season in the earth’s perennial cycle. Here on Grand Bahama it is also time to look forward to the spring offering from the Regency Singers. Back  from a one-year hiatus, this multi-talented group, under the direction of Lois Desaulniers is offering a wonderfully eclectic programme of old and new music, under the theme of Hallelujah; in fact, the singing begins and ends with “Hallelujah”, but they are different and you’ll have to come and find out which is which.

The core offering this year is the Bach cantata No. 4, “Christ lay by Death enshrouded”, originally performed in 1704 and still regarded as an Easter masterpieces.  However, Beethoven, Mozart, Fauré as well as more contemporary composers are also featured,  The selections will vary from “classical” to modern, spirituals,  folk and pop and will display the full range of vocal talent in the group, most of whom are from Grand Bahama’s schools and churches. One thing that does not change is Lois Desaulniers’ commitment to the best music and singing that she can produce.

To do justice to these rich offerings Desaulniers has put together an instrumental ensemble, featuring Ozzie Hall, well-known and respected musician, Sheena Moree, pianist,  Hazel Springer, organist and young but extremely talented  instrumentalists, who have performed with the group on previous occasions, to produce musical accompaniment to the various pieces. In addition, the Allegro String Orchestra, featuring some of the best young musical talent in Grand Bahama, will perform the introductory pieces of the programme. Of the Singers Desaulniers has  no doubts about challenging them on their capabilities. “There is so much talent in this group,” she says, “they go from strength to strength, and I am constantly in search of music that enables them to display their voices to the best of their abilities.”

Those who have attended previous concerts of the Regency Singers know that this will be another excellent offering. If you haven’t yet attended one of their concerts, or if you think you know what to expect, prepare to be surprised, as the group never repeats the same kind of programme. The concert will be held next Wednesday, April 2nd at 8 p.m. in the Pro-Cathedral of Christ the King. Tickets: available at Seventeen Shop (Downtown) are $20 for adults and $12  for students.
