Nassau, Bahamas -Tiffany Darling’s
piece “
Unforgetta-BULL Moments” captured the top spot at
the local leg of the Red Bull Art of Can Exhibition held on Friday night
at The Hub, earning its place in the regional exhibition carded for
Kingston, Jamaica October 1st - 11th.
It was a memorable
night for all of the 200+ attendees of the exhibition where fifteen
(15) diverse pieces including a work of body art, were on display. The
Art of Can competition was free and open to all inspired Bahamian artists
where the intent was a creative interpretation of the iconic Red Bull
can. The exhibition was a first for tTe Bahamas and local artists didn’t
disappoint.
Deliberating
judges expressed their pleasure with this innovative event concept and
remarked at the great talent shown by the artists in the range of their
submissions. Renowned Bahamian sculptor Antonius Roberts, along with
the Ministry of Culture’s Angelique McKay and talented collage artist
Sue Katz rounded off the expert panel of critics. Pieces were judged
based on the extent of their Creativity, Construction and Conceptual
Execution.

Darling’s
piece was unanimously chosen as the winner with judge Roberts commenting
that it was indeed outstanding given Darling’s use of every part of
the Red Bull Can in the creation of a 3ft multi-tiered wedding cake.
Italia Williams’ second place body art design entitled “
Gives
U Wings” was showcased on a live model that drew many photographs
and great crowd interest. Bahamian artist Dorman Stubbs was nudged into
third place with his noted piece “
Flying Bull Fish” that
creatively incorporated the medium of glass.
The exhibition
was organised under the direction of Jonathan Murray and Margot Bethel
of The Hub. The venue was an apt location for the Art of Can given the
eclectic mix of artistic activities typically hosted in this creative
space. In attendance were art aficionados, Friends of Red Bull and well-known
members of the Junkanoo fraternity.
Red Bull Art
of Can has a long international history which began in Europe in 2000.
Since then, exhibits have been hosted all over the world including Prague,
Zurich, London, Dublin, Dubai, Budapest, Vienna, Warsaw and Amsterdam.
Some U.S. cities that have hosted Red Bull Art of Can exhibits include
Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston and Chicago.
