Nassau Historical Society holds AGM and elects new officers

Nassau, Bahamas - The Nassau Historical Society held their Annual General Meeting last week and a slate of officers were elected. Continuing as president is Jim Lawlor with 1st vice president, Stephen Aranha and 2nd vice president, Dr. Vernal Allen.

Nassau, Bahamas - The Bahamas Historical Society's next talk takes place on Wednesday, 11th April at 6pm with Eric Wiberg on “ U-Boats in the Bahamas and Bermuda Triangle”.

Because of war time censorship it was not well known that The Bahamas was an important theatre of war during World War 2. German and italian U-Boats sought to destroy cargo ships carrying vital war materials, especially oil from Texas and Venezuela, to embattled Great Britain. These ships were easy prey as they transitted the narrow shipping lanes around the Bahamas archipelago...

Nassau, Bahamas - The Bahamas Historical Society with have Dr. Keith Tinker, author of "The Bahamas in American History" at their next talk on March 29th, 2012.

The author draws on a wealth of tapped and untapped primary sources and presents a new perspective on the "Bahamian experience" that helped to define the self-proclaimed American credo of "Manifest Destiny."

Keith Lamont Tinker is retired executive director of the National Museum of the Bahamas, former adjunct professor of Caribbean history at the College of the Bahamas, and author of Migration of Peoples from the Caribbean to the Bahamas...

Nassau, Bahamas - The Bahamas Historical Society presents ‘The Great Bahamas Hurricane of 1866’, with Wayne Neely, one of the world’s leading authorities on Bahamian and Caribbean hurricanes on Thursday 23rd February at 6pm at the BHS Museum . Neely will give an engaging account of this awe-inspiring meteorological event. He will reveal how this hurricane literally devastated the entire Bahamas and actually altered the course of Bahamian history.

Wayne Neely is a certified Bahamian Meteorologist and Forecaster working at the Department of Meteorology in Nassau, Bahamas for the last 20 years. Nassau, Bahamas - Two truly memorable events occurred at The Bahamas Historical Society last week.

The first was the talk of Dr Jennifer Bethel on Female Slaves in The Bahamas. The crowd was slightly less than the number of extras in a Cecil B de Mille epic movie some 125 some standing and some sitting in our 70 seats!
