Freeport, Grand Bahama - At about 6:45 pm on Friday 6th May 2011, M April Garvey of West End,
Grand Bahama, was driving her car west along the Warren J Levarity
Highway and as she approached the round-a-bout at the Freeport Container
Port junction, she saw a person fall from a moving vehicle ahead of her
and landed on the tarmac. The vehicle did not stop.
Ms Garvey, who was on her way home, became concerned and circled the
round-a-bout, then stopped at the entrance to the Container Port road,
where she saw that it was an elderly woman who had fallen from the
moving vehicle. She appeared to be very seriously injured.
Ms Garvey immediately telephoned the police and ambulance personnel,
while attempting to comfort the injured woman, who was writhing in pain
on the ground.
She remained on the scene until the police and ambulance arrived and
transported the woman to the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
As a result of her compassionate action in coming to the aid of a
helpless person in distress, Ms Garvey was selected to receive the Most
Courteous Driver of The Quarter Award for June 2011.
She was presented with a gift certificate for a full tank of gasoline along with an inscribed mahogany and silver plaque.
