Nassau, Bahamas - The Rotaract Club of East Nassau, a community service organization comprised of young professionals, continue to direct their philanthropic efforts toward the needs of Bahamian children.
Recently, the Club partnered with the Seahorse Institute, a Nassau-based member of The Caribbean Center for Child Development, to help implement a program for Children with auditory processing disorder (APD). The Rotaract Club donating the funds needed for treatment and training. The donation follows a previous donation to its longtime partner, the Ranfurly Homes for Children.
Auditory Processing Disorder affects the way that the brain processes auditory information, and can lead to a variety of learning, hearing and speech disorders. It is estimated that 2-3% of children are affected by APD. The Rotaract Club donated funds that are to be used for materials to help the Institute provide specifically tailored auditory processing therapy, and to send Seahorse Institute experts to training opportunities in South Florida.
“The Club always looks for ways that it can make a meaningful impact in our community, and assisting with youth development in The Bahamas has become a particular focus”, said Stacy Gray, Rotaract Community Service Director, who made the donation possible along with Iona Henderson, the Club Service Director. “When we discovered the Seahorse Institute, and the great work that they do, we knew that we wanted to help them any way we can. We’re delighted to be able to assist them with their efforts to treat APD, and their continued efforts to treat children with autism and other developmental delays”, continued Iona Henderson.
The Club also donated funds from fundraising initiatives to the Ranfurly Homes for Children. “We’ve been a longtime supporter of Ranfurly”, said Amanda Knowles, President of the Rotaract Club. “We’re always excited to do anything that we can to help the kids, whether that be through physical assistance with special events, acquiring donations of books and supplies, or by donating money to help the Home continue the great work it does in our community.”
The Rotaract Club of East Nassau, sponsored by the Rotary Club of East Nassau and a member of Rotary International, is a community service organization for young professionals ranging in age from 18-30. This year the Club also received a Presidential Citation, awarded to high-achieving clubs by the 2010-2011 President of Rotary International, Ray Klinginsmith.
