Nassau, Bahamas - Prior to 1989 the constitution and bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. However on May 4th 1989 the US Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender.

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a “watershed moment” in the history of Rotary and the vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs.

From then to now women have played a pivotal role in Rotary and have contributed greatly to the overall success of Rotary International. There are presently over 200,000 women in Rotary clubs worldwide, 146 of which comprise Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas. Many of these pioneering women have served in key positions within Rotary as Presidents of their Clubs, District Leaders, Assistant Governors, District Governors and also RI Directors.

RCNS would especially like to recognize Ms. Rowena Bethel, the first ever female Rotarian in the Bahamas. She is also a member of the South East Rotary Club .
RCNS thanks all of its women members in the club for your support over the years and we value the contribution which you continue to make towards the advancement of women in The Bahamasand in Rotary Clubs worldwide.
