Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the IMF’s warning that the PLP Government’s deficit projection is too low:

“Once again the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is warning the PLP Government that they are too optimistic with their budget projections and we are far worse off than this Government would have us believe.  The latest IMF report warns that our deficit will be around $100 million higher than the PLP forecast for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.  The PLP tells us the deficit problem is fixed but nothing could be further from the truth.”

“Everywhere Bahamians look for the past four years they see the tell-tale signs of a failing economy, in fact this PLP Government seems blind to all the warning signs. From Baha Mar to a historically high murder rate that has chased away tourists; and our struggling economy that is in dire straits.  Can anyone truly in the PLP organization be surprised that Moody’s credit agency is threatening to lower our nation’s credit rating to ‘junk status’? It’s not hard to see – you only need to open your eyes and look.  The PLP has long made it their mission to ignore our country’s problems as they focus on enriching themselves.  But in their four years in power, this Government has only proven that you cannot fix a problem when you choose to ignore it.

“Transparency and accountability are the first steps to getting our fiscal house in order.  But those are foreign concepts to this PLP Government.  We at the FNM will hold them accountable – because the people deserve nothing less from their leaders. It is time for Prime Minister Christie to tell us who will be held accountable for his Government’s constant failures to manage our economy. The lies have caught up with this PLP Government, and Bahamians have grown tired of their empty rhetoric and broken promises.  They want accountability and results, and they know the FNM stands ready to deliver on both.”
