After Bahamians were forced to suffer through five years of repeated and frequent power failures and blackouts during those sweltering dog days of summer under the watch of the FNM government, it is refreshing to see that BEC has finally gotten a handle on the general maintenance and care of its power generation facilities.

The Progressive Liberal Party applauds the strong, determined and decisive leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis and BEC Chairman Leslie O Miller who brought the correct priorities, fiscal discipline and focus to the operations and administration of the once beleaguered corporation that teetered on the brink of bankruptcy due to due poor leadership, neglect and mixed priorities just two years ago.

Mr. Miller and his Board brought in new leadership, restored the Clifton Pier power plant, eliminated the use of the costly standby gas turbine generators brought in by the FNM, reconnected many BEC accounts through a restructured plan and reduced the cost of electricity all in the relatively short period of time. His productivity, high level of performance and results oriented management style must be recognized as it is only right and fair to do so.

Both journalists and cartoonists were given a much-needed break from having to write article after article on repeated blackouts from power failures and frequent apologies from BEC to do better only to experience more power failures.

Bahamians also remember well the numerous blackouts that were the order of the day under the FNM administration due to a lack of preventative maintenance to existing power plants and no strategy to expand BEC’s power generation capacity to meet increasing demands. The former chairman and executives of BEC were redundantly distracted by and consumed with interviews and press releases to explain to a frustrated public why and apologize for the numerous power failures by BEC all because of the ineptness and lack of vision of the FNM political directorate at that time.

Thankfully this is all behind us and the leadership of BEC can now focus their energies on the much needed energy reform initiative as we look to the future for the supply of sustainable and cost effective energy sources.
