"Bradley Roberts: Have Several Seats!" says DNA

The recent comments by PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts regarding the DNA’s participation in the RABL Landfill Awareness Protests call to mind the now immortal words of former US President Abraham Lincoln who once said: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Once again Roberts has proven exactly how out of touch and backwards the thinking of this Christie led administration truly is. Rather than focus on the issue, which in this case is the fact that the health and livelihoods of thousands of Bahamians is being threatened by the government’s lack of ability and lack of interest in addressing issues surrounding the New Providence landfill, Roberts has chosen to do what he does best: DEFLECT!

The PLP’s chairman’s commentary is proof that this government, like the ones before it, is concerned only with appearances and not in PROVIDING REAL SUSTAINABLE AND QUANTIFIABLE CHANGE! We need only delve back a few months into the country’s history to when this government sat on potentially life threatening information which has been allegedly responsible for increased instances of cancer and other illnesses in the Marathon constituency following the Rubis gas leak. In the face of countless examples of the government’s callous disregard for the health and welfare of the citizenry of this country, the idea that Bahamians – whether they be politicians, preachers, or teachers – are unpatriotic for taking a stand and demanding more from our political leadership is an affront to the democracy which the DNA and countless right thinking Bahamians are working tirelessly to protect. True lack of patriotism is a failure to fight for and protect the rights of Bahamians here in New Providence and across our archipelago.

Also of note was the chairman’s displeasure with the location of last Sunday’s demonstration I hasten to remind the good chairman that the ONLY time this administration has even attempted to act on behalf of the Bahamian people has been when international focus has brought to bear on a particular issue.

It appears that the chairman needs to be reminded of the PLP’s ill-advised decision to erect tasteless crime billboards during the last general election season. Were those billboards – which were placed in high traffic areas for tourists and residents alike to see – not embarrassing and damaging to the country’s international reputation? Was the decision by the PLP at that time not an attempt to paint the Bahamas and its people in a negative light? And what of the embarrassment to the financial services industry caused by the PLP government’s release of private emails of private citizens. Better yet, what of the US State Department Report which chided the government over its less than transparent procurement process? Where was Bradley Roberts’ concern for the country’s international reputation on any of these issues? HOW QUICKLY WE FORGET!

And so, in the spirit of sharing, I too have some unsolicited advice for Mr. Roberts. HAVE SEVERAL SEATS! I implore you to cease and desist from offering any commentary, political or otherwise until such time as you, and this government are truly able to fathom the complexities of what it means to be a true patriot. Rather than using your political platform to cling to the memories of your political hay day we invite you to retire your prehistoric and outdated notions of what is best for the people of this country because BAHAMIANS HAVE NO NEED OF IT!
