The passage of Hurricane Matthew represents the most widespread natural disaster to face the Bahamas in recent memory. No island in our beautiful archipelago was spared from the destruction.

Amid reports of harrowing rescues, NEMA is to be commended for its quick responses, which undoubtedly saved lives. We are equally pleased with the rapid response of assessment teams moving around through the island of New Providence and the wider country. We ask that these groups be allowed to complete their work without hindrance.

Now, many Bahamians will begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives from scratch. Even in the face of such tremendous loss however, we are eternally grateful to God that no lives were lost, for where there is life there is hope, and a chance to begin again. Now more than ever, we must pull together and become our brother's keeper. We must continue to have faith, trusting and believing that the Almighty will see us through.

Let us also be prayerful for our brothers and sisters to the South who experienced loss, damage and tragedy especially those in Haiti.
