Chairman Collie Calls Out Chairman Robert’s Dubious Celebration

Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the PLP’s celebrating its four years in power:

“What does this Government have to celebrate? While The PLP celebrates with the finest champagne that money can buy, the people are suffering. The dubious achievements that they celebrate have brought The Bahamas to the brink.  In the last four years the country has taken giant steps backwards as the PLP has failed to deliver on their many promises.  In fact the only consistencies we’ve seen in the past four years are the PLP broken promises and empty rhetoric.    The PLP Chairman's celebratory back-slapping was simply more of the same.”

“This Government celebrates progress while Baha Mar sits vacant and empty and the 5,000 promised jobs go unfulfilled. Our economy has shrunk for two straight years and our national debt continues to increase at an unsustainable rate and yet the PLP boasts of progress. Thousands more Bahamians are unemployed today than four years ago. Homes and businesses are being foreclosed left, right and center due to the PLP unfulfilled mortgage relief programme and more and more Bahamians are being added to the poverty statistics and yet this uncaring governing party brags and celebrates.”

“The PLP boasts of progress while hundreds of our young men and women literally die on our streets each year. The fear of crime stalks our land as our murder rate hits record highs in the past two years and is well on its way to hitting another record this year.  This Government proclaims progress as taxpayers are forced to foot the bill for a $100 million bailout of the struggling Bank of the Bahamas, and their handpick Chairman admits that politics has influenced the banks bad lending decisions.”

“The world community calls our country out for corruption including a report that cites the PLP for failing to effectively implement anti-corruption laws which have allowed officials to wantonly engage in illegal practices with impunity.  And I’m sure they see it as progress when they turn a blind eye to a politically connected contractor building BAMSI without having the contractors insurance.”

“The Chairman of the PLP is in LA-LA land with his rosy report as he can be the only person who sees what he describes, because the only progress the PLP has made is in enriching themselves at the expense of the ordinary Bahamian. It must be distressing to ordinary Bahamians to hear the Chairman of this failing governing party so happily proclaim progress as they suffer through a stagnant economy, rising crime and creeping government corruption infecting the country. The PLP Chairman’s dubious celebration only serves to prove that you cannot fix problems when you continue to ignore them.  The Bahamian people deserve better.”
