Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the revelation that the Prime Minister’s budget included a $2 million slush fund:

“Time and time again, this Government has shown it doesn’t believe in transparency and oversight, and now in an election year the country is told that the Prime Minister has rewarded himself with a $2,000,000 slush fund. The previous fiscal year the fund stood at $29,000 – that’s right, $29,000. Now it’s $2,000,000 – a stunning increase of 6,000 percent!”

“What’s even more stunning is that the Prime Minister used less than $1,000 for the first nine months of the last fiscal year. So why the astronomical increase? What does the Prime Minister and this Government plan to do with their ill-gotten $2,000,000? The people deserve to know, it is their right, considering it is the tax payer’s dollars that are funding it!”

“We have made it clear that this Government will use the budget as an election tool, and sadly this revelation only confirms what we all knew to be true.”

“The Prime Minister owes it to the people to publicly declare what his new $2,000,000 slush fund will be used for. When we have families that are unable to afford to pay for the electricity, groceries and mortgages, they deserve to know what their tax dollars are being spent on. They also want to know what safeguards and measures are in place to make sure this slush fund is not used in any illegal way or as an asset to their campaign efforts.”

“Sadly, this is nothing new for the PLP government. It’s just an extension of their corrupt ways where they lavish government contracts on their families and friends. Their mentality and actions have encouraged corruption to seep into every level of government, and their main directive is to enrich themselves. When the FNM is elected to lead, one of our first actions will be to shine the light on all these corrupt practices and get to the bottom of the Prime Minister’s $2,000,000 slush fund.”
