Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on Prime Minister Christie’s comments on the Baha Mar Project:

“Only when pressed for details by the FNM is the Prime Minister reluctantly forced to admit the truth about this Government’s secret dealings with the China bank and contractor on their Baha Mar debacle. Now we find out that the Prime Minister has ‘conceded’ that under the ‘Framework Agreement’ clouded in secrecy that he’s negotiating, ‘the Chinese are not obligated to compensate Bahamian contractors and their local creditors.’

“The Prime Minister insists it’s his ‘intention to bring about the resumption of construction’ at Baha Mar, but we are asking at what cost to the people here? This secret deal with the Chinese could amount to a give away to a foreign country at the expense of our hard working contractors and local businesses that invested in the project from the outset. In fact, it could mean up to 123 Bahamian contractors could lose out on up $74 million on work they have already done on Baha Mar.”

“Who benefits by this secret deal? Not our people, not our workers, not our contractors. If they are not paid for the work done, then any secret deal would only benefit the Chinese and this Government who continues to seek headlines in an election year. Really - how can this Government suggest with a straight face that it is looking out for Bahamians when they are only looking out for themselves?”

“The Bahamian people see through this sham of empty rhetoric and broken promises that the PLP Government continues to try and sell. The Baha Mar debacle has been one broken promise after another. Bahamians deserve a government that will stand up and fight for them not to sell out our contractors and our people to foreigners for a quick fix at campaign time. The FNM will provide the leadership that the Bahamian people demand and deserve. We will focus on getting the country moving again, not enrich ourselves at the people’s expense.”
