Nassau, Bahamas - The following is a press statement by the Rt Hon. Perry G. Christie, MP, Leader of the Opposition for the Progressive Liberal Party:

Atlantis is the nation’s single largest private employer.  Thousands of Bahamian jobs are at stake.  I cannot understand how the Prime Minister can be conducting politics-as-usual in the middle of this crisis.  We’re told he found out on Friday that the Brookfield deal was going under. Did he tell the people of The Bahamas? Did he call union leaders or meet with workers?  Did he start reviewing options for moving forward?  No! Instead, he staged a political rally in Grand Bahama! Bahamians had to wait until Tuesday to learn the distressing news about the collapse of the Atlantis deal from foreign media sources!

At a time when our nation is desperately in need of leadership and re-assurance, and a vision and plan for the way forward, the only thing Prime Minister Ingraham can offer the Bahamian people are low-down nasty insults and cheap political stunts. Do your job. Fight for Bahamians.

Mr. Ingraham also seems allergic to taking responsibility.  A deal falls apart in 2012...and he says it’s because of decisions made in 2006!  Now he’s talking about events in the 1990’s.  What’s next — how many decades will he reach back to in tomorrow’s statements?  He’s asking Bahamians to hold the PLP accountable for his failures.  What nonsense.

Stop playing games, Mr. Ingraham. This is serious business. Cut the politics out and do your job! There is simply too much at stake for you to be taking such a silly and immature approach to this matter. Be a leader. Put Bahamians first.
