(Statement) Two
years ago, a catastrophic gas leak by the Rubis service station on Robinson
Road exposed thousands of Bahamian families to toxic fumes, contaminating the
water supply and potentially destroying the quality of life for residents, not
just in that community but across the entire island of New Providence.
More
than one year ago – in February 2014, this Christie led administration took
receipt of an independent environmental study which clearly detailed the health
risks for residents in the area and made recommendations on how to proceed. For
more than a year however, this government opted not to act on behalf of its
citizens. Only now, after months of agitating are residents finally having
their concerns aired.
The
delayed release of the Black and Veatch environmental study is indicative of
the late again style of governance perpetuated by this Christie government
since taking office. It has become clear, now more than ever, that this
government is unable or simply unwilling to take swift action on matters of
national importance – that is, unless it serves the personal interests of some
members of government.
Even
more distressing is the position taken by the Attorney General who was
responsible for authorizing the release of the document. Rather than admit
fault in the handling of the matter, Mrs. Maynard Gibson attempted to deflect
questions from the media even insisting that there was no actual delay in the
release of the information. Her cavalier attitude about having this pertinent
document sit on someone’s desk for an entire year while Bahamians continued to
have their health compromised is both disturbing and unacceptable.
The
Democratic National Alliance has long called for the government to become
greater environmental stewards. However, on this and countless other occasions,
the government has failed to do what is necessary to protect our natural
resources. The implications and impact of such a leak on the island’s water
table are far reaching and raise concerns for
ALL residents here in New Providence. The need for swift action
cannot be understated.
The
government must be made to answer for its clear dereliction of duties in regard
to this matter; and must take
IMMEDIATE
and PUBLIC steps to correct the wrongs in this matter which includes
holding the Company responsible as well.
The
handling of this gas leak is but one example of this Christie led administration’s
failure to address issues of national importance, chief of which should be the
protection of its citizenry.
