The Community Outreach Committee of the DNA Women’s Alliance was delighted to host its first Interactive Skills Workshop for High School Students and young adults in New Providence on Saturday June 13, 2015 at the Meridian School from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. This is the first cohort out of several according to Kanya McKenzie, the Public Relations Officer for the DNA Women’s Alliance.

The One Day Interactive Skills Workshop which focused on work readiness skills and those skills that are transferable, portfolio development and a mock interview brought together high school students and recent graduates for the purpose of preparing them for the very competitive workforce. The workshop was highly interactive and engaging. The sharing of ideas, strategies and best practices were the underlying goal behind the workshop and the content structure. There was emphasis on practical information and skill-building.

Thirty (30) youth between ages seventeen - twenty five have registered to participate in the DNA’s work readiness Program that will be held over a three months period. The first set of students selected for Cohort One, successfully completed the training last Saturday. The One Day Interactive Work Readiness" training course hosted by the DNA Women’s Alliance is part of the DNA Women’s Alliance Community Work Readiness initiative that was launched this summer which seeks to assist youth in finding and sustaining employment.

The workshop offered, transfers a set of basic employability and transferable skills that young Bahamians need to be successful as entry-level workers or young entrepreneurs. It also offered participants the chance to learn about themselves, to understand how to work as part of a team, and to enhance their knowledge of the most important factors in finding and maintaining employment.

The work readiness training draws on the experience and advice of experts like Dr. Monique Thompson, Ms. Heather McDonald, Mr. Ricardo Wells, Mr. Delano Munroe, Mrs. Stephanie Lightbourne & Mrs. Prodesta Moore, who provided very important strategies and tips for success in employment, helping to guide these young minds to better understand what businesses are looking for when selecting employees.

Prodesta Moore congratulated the participants attending the training for enhancing their marketability and equipping themselves with skills that will allow them to succeed both in the workplace and in their everyday life. She reminded them that the technical skills they learned are also essential life skills which would allow them to "pursue their path in life with greater self-confidence." Mrs. Moore also emphasized that employers would value a strong work ethic, punctuality, and personal integrity, which the training sought to cultivate and strengthen.

We are happy to report that the students left there not only feeling full from the Free Deluxe breakfast and lunch that was prepared by our very own Chef Brenda Johnson, but also enriched and motivated according to the evaluation surveys they completed at the end of the session.

One of the highlights for us was receiving an email from a parent immediately following the workshop which reads “I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules and hosting your one day workshop for Grade 12 students and newly graduates. My son attended this event and came home excited and well able to impart information that was shared with him and others. Thank you for extending yourselves, time and energy with the next generation of leaders. Kindly include me on your list if there is anything else that you may be offering that my son may be able to benefit from.”

The graduates that completed Cohort 1 on Saturday, have demonstrated that they have the determination to make a change in their lives and are seeking new ways to achieve their desired goals for the future. The DNA Women’s Alliance will continue to assist these young men and women along the path to gaining and sustaining employment by seeking to match them with jobs and coach them along the way.
