Over the past three years in office, PM Perry Christie has, on more than one occasion, boasted of the more than 40 years he has spent in public office. Unfortunately, the Bahamas has little to show in the way of progress for Mr. Christie’s years of “service”. In fact, the country is in dire straits. With a murder rate barreling toward the triple digits for another consecutive year, record youth unemployment and a middle class crumbling under the weight of a growing tax burden, the citizens of our small country are perhaps worse off than they were in 1967.

Even as the country burns however, the person tasked with overseeing the legislative development of our nation finds time to make a public spectacle of himself. During a recent Fox Hill Day Celebrations Mr. Christie and members of his cabinet engaged in an embarrassing display of song and dance proving yet again that their priorities are in the wrong place.

While the annual events in Fox Hill were designed as celebratory events to mark the emancipation of slaves, The Bahamas under the leadership of Perry Christie has little to celebrate. In fact, this government, which promised to “Believe in Bahamians”, has at every turn chosen foreigners to execute its objectives, effectively treating Bahamians as second-class citizens in their own country. Even in the face of countless broken promises including the promise to respect the collective voice of the citizenry, the Prime Minister dances.

In the face of multiple conflicts of interest on the part of his cabinet ministers, the PM has chosen his infamous shuffle over addressing such matters. V. Alfred Grey has been allowed to interfere in the course of justice, the DPM has been allowed to mislead Parliament over BAMSI and most recently the AG has found herself at the center of a conflict of interest regarding Baha Mar. Rather than use the opportunity at the Fox Hill Day celebrations to address the litany of public concerns, the PM danced.

After failing to properly execute its highly touted Mortgage Relief Program, Bahamians who supported the PLP during the last general election are still losing their homes; yet their Prime Minister dances.

While the PM and his cabinet put on performances the economy continues to underperform, students at the BJC and BGCSE level continue to underperform and scores of qualified Bahamians are choosing to live outside the country rather than return home due to a lack of opportunity and advancement.

Clearly now, is not the time to dance. Mr. Christie cannot shuffle his way around the myriad of problems facing our country. This Christie led administration must get serious about the development of this country before it is TOO LATE!
