DPM Davis: It’s a time of great uncertainty

Nassau Bahamas -- I wanted to congratulate the Prime Minister for his speech last night at the University of The Bahamas, where he spoke about our national development and our work with CARICOM.

The Prime Minister highlighted the ways in which regional cooperation can be so important on critical issues like shutting down illegal immigration, sharing data to increase our security, and standing together on climate change.

When we think about the coming years, many are projecting a time of increased turbulence in the world. There’s no question that it’s a time of great uncertainty.

In the United States, the newly proposed budget affects environmental research programs and the Environmental Protection Agency. We cannot pretend that this has no consequences for The Bahamas.  We are going to have to work closely with other small island nations around the world that are threatened by these changes to policy.

As the Prime Minister noted last night, the two major hurricanes that recently impacted our nation caused terrible damage and threw our budget off course by 400 million dollars.  If climate change is not stemmed, there could well be an increase in severe weather events in the immediate future, even before the more dramatic threat to our nation that would come in the medium term.

So, as the Prime Minister said, our voices must be raised – we must be able to stand with others and have an impact on the global stage.

Our Prime Minister has a record of representing The Bahamas with intelligence, grace and composure. He has spoken at the United Nations, met with the President and the Vice President of the United States and the Premier and President of China, spoke for us ably at the Paris Climate Change negotiations, served as Chair of CARICOM and was the first Bahamian Prime Minister to meet with the Pope at the Vatican. At all times, Bahamians knew that he was representing Bahamians and our interests in a way that we could be proud of.

I regret to say that many Bahamians worry whether Mr. Minnis has the stature or the knowledge to represent us well on the global stage. He often seems uncomfortable when he’s unscripted, and he has struggled to discuss policy issues in Parliament. Like many Bahamians, I believe he’s too risky a choice in these difficult times.
