On Monday November 16, 2015, Member of Parliament for East Grand Bahama and Free National Movement Deputy Leader, Hon. K. Peter Turnquest & Mrs. Sonia Turnquest hosted the President, 1st Vice President and members of the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce (GHBCC), along with a representative of Prairie View A&M University Alumni Association and alumni resident on Grand Bahama to a reception. The GHBCC is presently wrapping up a five-day trade mission to Grand Bahama where they had an opportunity to view investment and trade opportunities on island. MP Turnquest welcomed this visit following an invitation some four years ago where he had the opportunity to address an international investment forum in Houston. Working together with Ms. Vernita Harris, President of the GHBCC, Mr. Lynden Rose, Honorary Counsel in Houston, GB Chamber President, Kevin Seymour, Executive Director Mercynth Ferguson and other partners, the mission came to fruition and as a result we expect opportunities for investment and trade will flow between the two cities. Already, the delegation is investigating real estate development opportunities for second homes and sporting events that may be hosted on the island. MP Turnquest stated, “This and similar efforts and persistence will help turn around the fortunes of Grand Bahama, with active participation and promotion of the advantages of Grand Bahama, not just as a destination for play but equally as a destination for investment and business. The GBCC plans to pay a reciprocal visit to Houston next May when it is expected that formal arrangements will begin to establish a sister city relationship.” The representative from Prairie View A&M University, Phyllis Darden-Caldwell, brought Alumni up-to-date on developments at the University and highlighted the opportunities for international students in athletics and academic disciplines.
