Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the Deputy Prime Minister Brave Davis taking responsibility for the electricity issues at BPL:

“It is no wonder why BPL has been having so many problems recently. Deputy Prime Minister Brave Davis finally admitted last week that the Government should be held responsible for all the issues at BPL because the PLP Government can’t decide what to do at the power company. Just weeks ago, the Prime Minister admitted that it was the Government’s fault for not ordering generators on time to meet the increase in demand for electricity leading to constant power outages in New Providence. The PLP Leadership can’t seem to manage any other aspects of the government so why are they trying to manage BPL? ”

“It was only last week when asked about the power failures hurting so many families suffering through the hot summer, that the Deputy Prime Minister told Bahamians, ‘Be patient. We will have an answer soon.’ Is that a statement that any Bahamian wants to hear? We ask the question, why is the Government meddling in the business of the electrical company? This Government is not implementing an almost $1 million secret business plan that experts wrote for BPL. Does the PLP think they can do a better job than the electrical experts at managing our electrical company? They have not been able to so far since we have been experiencing daily power outages in New Providence. ”

“We are amazed that BPL is still providing power at our expense to Baha Mar even though it sits vacant and owes the BLP over $26 million in overdue utility bills. This Government has created a system of the ‘haves’ and ‘have not’s’ where they pay the utmost attention to their friends and allies –the chosen few – while they ignore the people and it has now moved into the management of our electrical system. It’s unconscionable that the PLP are late again and are ill prepared for this summer heat wave. Any child in grade school could have alerted them to it coming. And telling families and seniors struggling and suffering through the heat with no power to, ‘be patient’ is the PLP’s typical tone deaf response.”

“Bahamians deserve leaders that will work towards fixing our electrical problems and not allowing Bahamians to suffer all summer long. We must let the experts run our power grid and not allow Government politics to get involved in the management of our electrical grid. The FNM will work to make our electrical system more sustainable in the long term but unlike the PLP we will work with the experts to manage it.”
