Dr. Minnis’ on the "Continued Lack of Response to Crime by the PLP"
By The Free National Movement

Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement:

“Robberies, shootings and tragically two more murders. Another weekend; another rash of crime rampaging through our communities. In 2012 the PLP promised that their leadership would lower the crime rate, primarily by the reintroduction of “Urban renewal 2.0”, yet under their Government “Urban Renewal 2.0” has been a colossal failure; a pit of corruption, misfeasance and wasted money; and the murder rate has hit record highs year after year. Under PLP leadership, crime has gotten markedly worse and is infecting every neighbourhood and community. Yet this Government insists things today are not as bad as last year’s record setting murder rate, and blames Bahamians for not seeing it their way.”

“The people want solutions and this Government ignores solutions. The Commissioner of Police recently proposed a series of potential efforts to address the crime epidemic. He suggested things like acquiring the services of a helicopter. The PLP’s response? Silence. Acquiring unmanned aerial vehicles to deploy for crime prevention. The PLP’s response? Silence. Construction of a forensic science facility with emphasis on a state-of-the-art DNA laboratory. The PLP’s response? Silence. Typical for the PLP, no response and no action to address a critical issue facing our communities and families. The PLP never learns that they cannot fix a problem by ignoring it.”

“As people live in fear we have a Government patting itself on the back because the country’s murder rate has not yet set another record as it has done in the previous three years. These past two months we have seen rampant crime across the Islands and this is at a time when the Bahamian people have more than enough hardships to shoulder. Now they have to worry about a crime wave this Government has shown absolutely no capacity to fix. It is time for this Government to finally stop blaming others and take responsibility for their past four years of empty rhetoric and broken promises.”
