Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the decline in the tourism industry under the PLP Government:

“How much more proof do we need, to know this Government continues to fail the Bahamian people? The latest dubious example is another report, this time from the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) which in its June 2016 Caribbean Region Quarterly Bulletin shows that - tourist arrivals shrunk by 0.5% in 2015. This is the reality, yet the empty rhetoric we get from the Prime Minister touts ‘ongoing, modest’ growth. It should come as no surprise that this PLP Government would try and deceive the Bahamian people with their broken promises, especially as it relates to the tourism industry.”

“This report from the IDB continues to show the PLP’s failure to improve our tourism industry. The PLP has continued to destroy our tourism economy for the past four years everywhere we look; from Baha Mar to the rising murder rate that has led to foreign countries issuing travel warnings. The Central Bank made it clear on the state of tourism, when it reported that the Bahamas’ tourism sector was slowing over the first quarter of this year and the prospects for the future are not any better.”

“As we enter this campaign season let’s remember the PLP’s record of empty rhetoric and broken promises. Four years ago they promised to get rid of crime, but it has only gotten worse. Four years ago they promised to re-invigorate our tourism industry but instead tourism is spiralling downward. The only thing we can count the PLP Government to do is mismanage our country, whether it is Baha Mar, the overblown budget of Junkanoo Carnival, the Bank of The Bahamas, or the tourism industry in general. The people deserve better and that is what the FNM will give them.”
