Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the Prime Minister’s recent comments on corruption at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) seminar on governance:

“The Bahamian people find it laughable when the Prime Minister is talking about the need for zero tolerance when it comes to corruption in government. His Government has institutionalized corruption at every level. They act with impunity, brazenly proclaiming publicly that the PLP first and foremost helps its supporters and families. If Prime Minister Christie wants to start a ‘zero tolerance’ policy on corruption he should start with his own Government. Not only has he used this year’s budget as his own personal piggy bank by creating an unexplained $2 million
slush fund for himself but he’s yet to explain how millions go missing each year under this Government.”

“Scandal and corruption has grown rampant under this Government -- if only the Prime Minister and his party spent half as much effort trying to turn our country around as they do enriching their friends, families, and allies, Bahamians would be better off. The growing list of scandals is endless from the Alfred Gray magistrate scandal, to the Rubis oil spill scandal, to the Urban Renewal Small homes repair scandal, the missing money at the Post Office, the College of The Bahamas, and the Departments of Customs and Road Traffic, and the list goes on and on.”

“If we are truly going to grow our economy we must stamp out the corruption and cronyism which is endemic in this Christie PLP Government. The people want to know – where is the transparency and accountability? Pretty speeches at an international seminar do nothing to fix the problems here. The habit of public money disappearing into private pockets must stop. It is the duty and responsibility of politicians of our generations to root out and stamp out the high level of corruption in our society and under an FNM Government procedures and policies will be put in place to prevent the uncontrolled stealing of public funds and those caught stealing will be brought to justice.”
