Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on Prime Minister Christie’s comments from his Budget Communication Wednesday, June 2, 2016.”

“On Wednesday we once again saw the deafness of this PLP Government to the mood of the Bahamian people. Prime Minister Christie used his Budget Communication to defend his Government’s failed policies of the economy by saying that the already high unemployment rate has only gone up slightly under this Government. The people who are out of work, who have been struggling to get by and who have been looking for jobs for years, do not think the Prime Minister’s high unemployment rate is a good thing.”

“When it comes to jobs, the Prime Minister is singing the same tune as his Minister of National Security who says the crime rate is heading in the right direction. They only need to walk through our neighbourhoods and communities to see that while crime is crippling our families, unemployment is hurting our families. The Prime Minister can hide behind his Government’s statistics, but he can’t hide from the truth. If they were actually growing the economy the unemployment rate would be going down and Bahamians would be working. Baha Mar would be open and the country would be in far better shape. But the people are struggling under the reality of this failing Government.”

“There are simple steps for the PLP Government to take to put people back to work – open Baha Mar and finally deliver on the 5,000 jobs they have been promising for years. They should take concrete steps to reduce crime so that people are no longer scared in their homes, and tourists aren’t afraid to visit here. Instead of just hiding behind faceless statistics there needs to be real action from the Government so that the Bahamian economy can get back on track.”

“The PLP Government continues to show they will never fix the problems when they choose to ignore them. Bahamians deserve better from their leaders and the FNM stands ready to serve and empower the entire country instead of just the chosen few that this Government continues to enrich along with themselves at the people’s expense.”
