Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the Prime Minister admitting to not ordering electrical generators on time:

“Back in elementary school we learn the changing of the seasons. Apparently the PLP leadership missed those simple lessons, because we found out this week from our embattled Prime Minister that his Government was ill prepared for the oncoming summer heat that is affecting so many homes and families. Many of them continue to suffer through power outages because, as the Prime Minister was finally forced to admit, the Government failed to prepare the power generation shortfall due to summer demand.’

“This PLP Government has made a habit of being asleep at the switch and it’s the people that suffer because of their ineptitude. It was only last week when asked about the power failures hurting so many families suffering through the hot summer, that the Deputy Prime Minister told Bahamians, ‘Be patient. We will have an answer soon.’ Well, we have the answer, this Government simply failed to get ready for the summer demand. How many mothers with young babies in New Providence have to suffer for the PLP’s latest failures? How many of our seniors are forced to sit through blistering heat with no power in some Family Islands because the PLP didn’t act in time?’

“Just recently we found out that this Government is still powering Baha Mar even though it stands vacant and owes the BLP over $26 million in overdue utility bills. This Government has created a system of the ‘haves’ and ‘have not’s, where they pay the utmost attention to their friends and allies –the chosen few – while they ignore the people. It’s unconscionable that the PLP are ill prepared for this summer heat wave, any child in grade school could have alerted them to it coming. - Telling families and seniors struggling through the heat with no power to, ‘be patient’ is the PLP’s typical tone deaf response.”

“Bahamians deserve leaders that will pay attention and plan for their needs year round. This Government fails miserably on all those counts, but the FNM hears these concerns and after the next election will work every day to make sure the people are no longer ignored!”
