Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on The Bahamas Job Placement Program:

“Instead of growing the economy and providing good jobs as they were elected and as they promised to do, the PLP has sat idly by and allowed the Bahamian economy to shrink for two full consecutive years. Baha Mar still sits vacant; an empty hulking testament to the PLP’s many broken promises – this one being their promise of five-thousand good paying jobs. Financial Services and businesses are downsizing, resulting in countless Bahamians out of work – especially our young Bahamians.

With so many families struggling and communities in economic distress it’s unconscionable – but unfortunately not surprising – that we found out that this Government is failing to do everything they can to help our people find employment and get the economy growing again. This is their main mission and they are failing miserably at it.”

“According to the Inter-American Development Bank’s recent report, the Department of Labour is only helping 2-percent of job-seekers to find the work they so desperately search for. 2-percent! What is this Government doing to improve the quality of life for the ordinary Bahamian? The report confirms that they certainly are not working for the unemployed as only 2 of every 100 persons who apply to the Department of Labour will be offered a job.”

“The report also showed that this Government’s Department of Labour’s placement is ‘exceptionally low’ when compared to other countries in the region. While our unemployment rate is over 30-percent for young people, the Department of Labour is ‘catching job vacancies from only 12 per cent of listed Bahamian businesses.’ For other places its 20-40%. This is unbelievable and unacceptable. We can and we must do better.”

“The Inter-American Development Bank makes it very clear that under this Government it’s the people that are well connected that get the work, not necessarily the ones most in need or those most prepared for the jobs. This is how this Government likes it – they have admitted time and time again – they take care of their own while the rest of us suffer. How convenient for them and their friends and allies, but how troubling for the rest of the Bahamians.”

“The PLP’s drive to enrich itself at the country’s expense amounts to generational theft. The report and the troubling unemployment numbers – with 1 out of 3 young Bahamians out of work – means that a whole generation are wondering how they will secure an education, provide for a family, or build a life. Sadly, this Government is systematically leaving them behind while telling us all that things are going well. Yes, going well for the chosen few – them and their friends and families – but not the rest of us.”

“The people deserve better. They deserve a government that looks out and works for everyone; not just the chosen few.”
