FNM Appoints New Senator, Monique Gomez

In the exercise of the powers vested in the Leader of the Opposition by Article 39 (3) and (5) of the Constitution, the Hon. Dr. Hubert A. Minnis is pleased to announce that he has advised Her Excellency the Governor General, Dame Marguerite Pindling, to appoint Ms. Monique V. A. Gomez, a Barrister- at- Law, and President of the FNM Women’s Association, to fill the Senate post vacated by Senator the Honourable Michael Pintard.

In making the appointment Dr. Minnis said, “I am most confident that Ms. Gomez will serve our nation with distinction and provide exemplary service in the Upper Chamber of our Legislature on behalf of all Bahamians.”

Ms. Gomez received a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of London. She was awarded a Master’s of Law from University College, London, and a Certificate of Good Standing from the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn. She was called to The Bahamas Bar in 1988 and is a former Bar Council Member. She practices in the areas of civil, commercial, family and criminal law.

She has wide legal experience, having worked as an Associate in the Law Firm of Christie Ingraham & Co., and Sterling Quant & Co. From 1993 to 1999 she served as Senior Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General.

Ms. Gomez worked briefly at the law firm of Higgs & Johnson before becoming a partner in Bain, Gomez & Co., in 2001. In 2009 she opened legal chambers and is presently the managing partner at Monique V.A. Gomez & Co.

A Vestry member of St. Agnes Anglican Church, she has assisted at the Church’s After-School Program and the Bahamas Law Guild Legal Aid Clinics. She has lectured in Constitutional and Administrative law at The Bahamas Bar Association, The College of The Bahamas and the Institute of Business and Commerce.

Born in New Providence, she is the daughter of Louise and Andy Gomez.
