FNM: Education investments showing return

The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the enrolment increases at the University of The Bahamas (UB):

“Before taking office in 2017, the FNM committed to raising the standards of education, expanding educational opportunities for every Bahamian and improving education overall. With enrolment increasing at the University of The Bahamas, the Minnis Administration is making positive progress and getting results.  

“Since our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, implemented a visionary program to cover tuition costs, enrolment at UB has increased 57 percent. And even more encouraging, it’s projected to grow by 10 percent annually.

“Nearly 3,000 students are benefiting from educational investment, ensuring many deserving Bahamians have the opportunity to earn their post-high school education. This will help them be better prepared to compete in an ever-changing job market.

“Prime Minister Minnis understands the role education plays in improving lives. He is working to bring the business community and public sector together to improve access and opportunities. UB’s new complex is a demonstration of this dynamic, as the new housing facility is being made possible through a public-private partnership. The business community is also alongside the Government to enhance apprenticeships and skills training.

“Despite the woeful PLP’s knee-jerk reaction to talk down any and all positive progress throughout the country, there are 2,900 new students who would say otherwise. This is coming from the same PLP that after having promised to double investment in education when campaigning actually reduced the education budget all but one year while in power.

“The Minnis Administration is committed to improving our education system and will continue investing in all Bahamians because we deserve nothing less from our elected leaders.”
