The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding Baha Mar’s coming expansion and its resulting job growth:

“Our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, and the FNM government are continuing to focus on job growth and long-term economic growth, even as they stage the most comprehensive disaster relief and recovery effort in Bahamian history.

“The government announced a $300 million expansion project at Baha Mar that will include new entertainment areas, family attractions, renovations to the resort and a new water park. This expansion will create over 500 jobs throughout the construction phase and then over 1,000 jobs once the construction phase is complete. The Minnis Administration also continues to uphold its promise of increasing Bahamian ownership of our economy – negotiating for a Bahamian firm to conduct the work on pools and hardscapes. Additionally, over 80% of the jobs will be reserved for Bahamian workers.

“Not only is our Prime Minister commendably managing a recovery effort of enormous scale, he hasn’t taken his foot off the gas when it comes to job creation and economic development.  We all realize that Hurricane Dorian presents new challenges for our economy but the Minnis Administration continues to prove it is up to the challenge in steering the country forward.

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, the woeful PLP proved woefully incapable and showed themselves to be more focused and interested in capitalizing personally on relief efforts. Those in power pocketed hurricane relief funds while simultaneously their mismanagement drove our economy further into the ground. The masses demanded answers but the woeful PLP ignored their calls, shamelessly dismissing the people they were elected to provide for.

“It’s no surprise the woeful PLP’s leadership now seems more focused on barking non-sensical partisan attacks from the sidelines as opposed to rolling up their sleeves to work with everyone else to turn the country around in the aftermath of this devastating hurricane. Thanks to the determined mission to reform government, our Prime Minister has sent such destructive political practices out to pasture and no matter how hard the woeful PLP try, The Bahamas will never return to their ways which stole from the people.

“The FNM applauds Prime Minister Minnis for his vision and action throughout the recovery effort, while staying the course on government reform, job growth and economic development. He knows Bahamians are up to the challenge and is working to ensure everyone has a better tomorrow.”
