 The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the announcement of the new medical school to be built in Grand Bahama:
“Our Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis is leading The Bahamas’ recovery and reconstruction, with decisive action and a clear focus on making progress in both Abaco and Grand Bahama. The historic disaster that dealt a blow to our nation will take time to heal, but it has not taken our government off course from its objective to create more jobs and opportunity for all Bahamians.
“Yesterday it was announced that a 98,000-square-foot medical school campus will be built in Grand Bahama. The Minnis Administration’s vision for the new medical school will contribute, in several ways, to The Bahamas’ long-term economic development. The construction phase will lead to over 150 jobs, and upon completion the university will host over 200 long-term jobs.
“Holding to their promise, our government has negotiated for at least an 80% Bahamian workforce to be utilized throughout construction and in non-faculty roles once the school is open and operating. Beyond these jobs, however, the university is focused on hiring Bahamians to faculty positions as well, committing to a ‘Bahamian first’ approach whenever possible in recruiting.
“Not only does this project help to mitigate the economic impact of Dorian on Grand Bahama while creating millions in revenue for the long term, it also helps to address our nation’s shortage of medical professionals. The new school will also provide opportunities to thousands of Bahamian students for years to come – giving them the skills they need to pursue globally competitive jobs in the medical industry.
“Our government continues getting results on job growth because it is committed to a vision of long-term economic growth and expanded opportunities for Bahamians of all ages and levels of skill. The mission to acquire more jobs takes hard work in ensuring adequate infrastructure and a level of government accountability that investors demand. From day one, our Prime Minister went to work on ensuring we’ve invested in our own infrastructure while reforming government by bringing accountability and transparency to the system. The resulting projects and plans are expected to bring thousands of jobs, collectively, demonstrating the FNM’s commitment to their promise. Our government will continue leading our nation forward and fighting for more opportunity, because Bahamians deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
