FNM: PLP should participate before disparaging

The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the PLP’s criticism of the Government over the hurricane relief effort:

“There is a time for politics and then there are times for leadership.  Partisan politicians – more interested in their political fortunes – can’t tell the difference, while true leaders do.  Sadly, the PLP continues to reveal themselves to be the former, not the latter.  Already, they look to point fingers, place blame and seek out ego-driven roles in the recovery as a majority of the country works together in the aftermath of the tragic natural disaster – a storm on a far greater scale than any in Bahamian history.

“The woeful PLP, realizing that the transparency and accountability brought to government when the FNM was swept into office in the last historic election will also guide the recovery efforts, are now lashing out as they tend to do.  Like a broken record, the woeful PLP returns to form offering up shameless, nonsensical criticism of ongoing relief efforts.  This is the same party whose tenure in office was marked by corruption and incompetence – sometimes managing both acts at the same time.  No one will soon forget the chaotic recovery after Hurricane Matthew, when funding for recovery victims seemed to line the PLP’s pockets rather than help those in need.

“Regardless of the PLP’s latest round of attacks, Bahamians across the country have been pleased by the efforts of Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis and his administration in the face of this historic disaster.  Its action-oriented response and ongoing effort to administer disaster relief while planning the reconstruction effort has pointed The Bahamas in the right direction as we attempt to move forward. Our Prime Minister has tirelessly worked to build a coalition of organizations, businesses and governments to assist The Bahamas’ relief effort. He has set forth a vision for a Ministry of Disaster Preparedness in order to maximise oversight related to existing relief funding while ensuring our country is better prepared to deal with future storms of similar destructive power.

“The woeful PLP’s latest criticism – this time of ongoing relief efforts – is a direct insult to Bahamian and non-Bahamian civil workers and volunteers helping to restore safety and order in Abaco and Grand Bahama. The woeful PLP’s nonsensical criticism, in place of participation, is disrespectful to everyone who is assisting – and not just yelling from the sidelines like they have their own feet comfortably planted.

“The PLP could demonstrate their dedication to the recovery effort by working alongside the Minnis Administration in solidarity, showing true leadership instead of typical partisanship. We don’t expect the party of talk to match the FNM on action, but should the PLP decide to participate, it would be of great comfort to those struggling to start the arduous recovery and reconstruction efforts on Abaco and Grand Bahama.

“The FNM Government knows this is a time for leadership and will cast aside the PLP’s desire to return to petty politics as they stay focused working for the people. And our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, will continue to pull every resource and commit every minute to restoring the lives of those affected, because he knows Bahamians deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
