This year marks the 51st anniversary of the attainment of Majority Rule; a national event which holds a special place in Bahamian history like the Emancipation of Slavery, Labour Day, and Independence – accomplishments that played major roles in the prosperity we experience in The Bahamas today.

Majority Rule is an event of significance which gave birth to the Bahamian Dream and represents a victory for the Bahamian people at large – it should not be narrowed down to an issue of race or partisan politics.  Its achievement in 1967 culminated multiple events effected due to the struggles of ordinary Bahamians from diverse backgrounds and social classes.

The attainment of Majority Rule was an inclusive occasion that united myriad individuals and interests within Bahamian society in the equitable exercise of the franchise to vote for representation in the best interest of the masses.  Its significance is shown in the right of all Bahamians to vote and participate in society irrespective of gender, ethnic or socio-economic status - a testament to the fact that no great nation can prosper when members of its society are disenfranchised to the benefit of a select few.

The journey to Majority Rule was one that required much sacrifice and commitment from our forefathers and foremothers. In the words of the popular proverb “We stand tall today because we stand on the shoulder of many ancestors”. However, the struggle for a better Bahamas continues another leg of the journey as the batons have been passed. Bahamians of this generation must take up the mantle to ensure that the majority rules from a philosophic and economic perspective.

As we reflect on this great event which paved the way for our nation’s independence, the Democratic National Alliance petitions our political leaders to refocus their attention on fostering an environment in our Bahamaland which grants our people the greatest opportunity to achieve the Bahamian Dream – a dream that speaks to inclusion, socio-economic empowerment, and pride in who we are and from whence we came.

We implore all Bahamians to embrace our history void of our support to political parties or colours and look toward our future success as a nation by pledging ultimate loyalty to the unifying colours of aquamarine, gold and black. (Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta)

Happy Majority Rule Day!
